How does a Cloaker's Engulf ability work?

From the PF SRD, The 3.5 Tactics section said Engulf is usually used versus a lone opponent, but it seems like the main danger of it comes only when you have other party members hitting the cloaker. The bite deals 1d4+2 damage, and is far from an auto-hit. (I believe the "+4 bonus on its...

Does a Shadowdancer's summoned shadow count as a shadow for hide in plain sight?

I'm leaning yes, it's just that things that are creatures often don't count as objects, and it makes it kind of easy to hide anywhere.

Does a tower shield give you total cover against Spiritual Weapon?

Assuming that the side of your square you pick to have total cover is facing the caster, since Spiritual Weapon strikes from the direction of the caster. (You still pick a side of your square, right?)

Raise my map fu -- drawing light sources on a battle mat.

I sure hope Chris Perkins has more map fu tips to give because my battle mats have gotten a lot cooler with cliffs and such. Now, how do I represent shadowy illumination on a battle mat, say a temple where the torches give bright light everywhere except behind the altar? Should I use movable...

Does Hypnotism automatically start a combat?

Most PCs and NPCs would automatically see a stranger casting spells as a reason to roll initiative, right? So the only way you'd ever get the better save DC is to get a surprise round, and then win the initiative roll?

"I don't like my Christmas present" -- do you enjoy getting treasure?

My DM was pretty put out when two magic items he created got forgotten in the backpack and then actually lost off our character sheets. (One was a gem of sending, the other was basically a DM-powered magic 8-ball.) When I thought about why I wasn't excited about this treasure, I realized: I've...

How does Rich Burlew's Diplomacy system handle threats?

I really like the whole "let's make a deal" approach to Diplomacy created by Rich Burlew. But so far instead of offering to kill my NPCs' enemies, give them gold, or allow free trade, my players are just offering one thing: "We'll let you live!" On the one hand, anything seems like a good deal...

Is it a standard action to hold onto a net?

What is this -- one check at the time you hit, a full-round action, a free action that takes both hands, or what? Edit: also, however many actions it takes, I would like to try to invert the rule. It should take the same number of actions and checks, but it should be the entangled creature who...

Can I adventure with my Liveoak treant?

Pathfinder removed the "within 300 feet from somewhere you need to guard" text from Liveoak, and even in 3.5 I don't think it would prevent the treant from coming adventuring with you once it was animated. So do I basically have a huge treant cohort if I want it? It makes my awakened tree look...

Can't give XP after clicking on a subscribed thread from the Control Panel

Confirmed on IE at work and Firefox at home. Nothing pops up when I click the thumbs up button in a thread I arrived at from my list of subscribed threads. Once I post in the thread, then I can give XP again.

Can you cast Spellstaff on your Changestaff, Shillelagh, or Staff of the Woodlands?

For Changestaff, I don't see any issues with casting Spellstaff on it. For Staff of the Woodlands, it matters if a magical staff counts as a wooden quarterstaff. For Shillelagh, it matters if "nonmagical" means "no magic cast on it at all," or "no enhancement bonus." What do you think?

The core mechanic -- am I doing it wrong?

Monte Cook quotation from here: I think I might want it to be a little different. I want to say "I do X" and the DM responds. That is, I want the rules to be so clear on what I can do that I don't need the DM to tell me what happens when I try; my character sheet and the dice do that. Any big...

Describing critical hits: finishing moves from God of War

This list was compiled from this video, might make your game more cinematic. Ways to execute a critical hit: Unarmed: • Take him prone, then with a knee on his back force his head back and twist till his neck snaps off. • Make him drop his weapon, then finish him with it. • Grab a guy...

Does Summon Swarm partly counter invisibility?

It would seem that covering an invisible creature with a swarm of spiders would tend to outline its form quite clearly while it was in the square. Should Summon Swarm work as an immobile Faerie Fire? How about a swarm of bats or locusts, where the form would not be as clear? And swarms are good...

When does magic work through walls?

I know that spreads work around walls, though not through them, but bursts and emanations don't. And walls block line of effect when you initially cast a spell, but your grease and summons don't go away if you go behind a wall later. Can Mage's Faithful Hound see you through a closed door? It...

Does Blink give you an 97% chance of walking through a wall?

Blink: The question is, does shunting end your movement. If it doesn't, then if you are standing next to a wall with 30 feet of movement, you can try moving through it five times, saving five feet of movement to step to the other side. The chance you fail all five times is only 1/32, leaving...

What knowledge check lets you identify humanoids?

Should knowledge (nature) work on regular humanoids as well as monstrous, say if you want to identify a drow's spell-like abilities? Probably a dumb question since humanoids are pretty weak. Do you let any knowledge skill hint at a humanoid's class levels?

What did you learn from your last commune with nature?

From reading Commune with Nature, it seems like you could cast it and have your DM tell you There are woodland creatures present in a 9 mile radius. There is a stream to your west. This is a forest. You become one with nature, attaining knowledge of the surrounding territory. You instantly...

How to make sure monsters disrupt a ritual?

I'm planning to awaken a plot-important tree with my druid. I told my DM I thought it would be awesome to have something attack us during the 24-hour casting time. There would be high stakes because of all the XP and time expended, and a dangerous-seeming combat because my druid wouldn't be able...
