D&D General Violent Solutions to Peaceful Problems

The rate of solved murders in Chicago is as low as 22% depending on demographics. I assume it's worse in the Forgotten Realms as snitches get fireballed along with any family members that happen to be nearby. You can have consequences but it shouldn't always lead to a jailbreak. A surviving...

Level Up (A5E) Can Mending Restore a Damaged Item?

The spell says, "as long as the break or tear is no larger than 1 foot in any dimension, you mend it, leaving no trace of the former damage." I'm curious as to why you would nerf the spell?

Level Up (A5E) Will a Druid ruin my exploration heavy game?

Sounds like a fun adventure! Make it a rainforest during monsoon season with routine tropical downpours and threats of flash flooding. You can control what the druid sees with storm clouds and when he can fly with thunderstorms, lightning, downpours and galeforce winds. Thick fog like...

D&D 5E [+] How can 5e best handle role playing outside of combat?

Ha, ha. We have ample real world evidence of people using persuasion (or intimidation) rather than medicine in such situations. I like your overall point, but what if you call for a deception check and the player says, "but I'm not trying to deceive them." Would you change the skill check...

D&D 5E Feats at first level (i.e. generalising Theros' idea)

I had one DM allow me to take it with my Leonin in Storm King's Thunder. It was fine as it gave a small boost every long rest. Think of it as a trinket with oomph.

    D&D 5E Minor Illusion question

The definition of a cantrip in the PHB is "a spell that can be cast at will, without using a spell slot and without being prepared in advance. Repeated practice has fixed the spell in the caster's mind and infused the caster with the magic needed to produce the effect over and over. A cantrip's...

    D&D 5E How would I build a Net-and-Trident Warrior?

D&D 5E Rewarding Bad Ideas (Mechanically)

I think the DM had a table from the DMG. Whenever a player took a critical hit from an enemy then he'd have to roll a d20 and the DM would give the results. Low numbers were bad. Maybe if you could add your constitution save modifier to the d20 roll then it wouldn't be so bad. Martials...

D&D 5E Rewarding Bad Ideas (Mechanically)

We tried lingering injuries in the last campaign I played in (LMoP). Our dwarven cleric got his foot hacked off. It really sucked to have a 10 foot move speed. He had to use a magical staff from one of the BBEG we killed as a crutch for the rest of the adventure. The DM said he might use...

D&D 5E Command and spike growth

What if it was a melee-only humanoid? If they don't move then they will be peppered to death by spells and arrows eventually. In that case they would need to get out of the spike growth anyways or die eventually, so the Command spell should work. Instead of attacking they will do the only...

D&D 5E 5e Flanking - the good, the bad, and the broken?

Yeah, you're going to have to explain how you think it works because I was directly quoting Sly Flourish, the guy who came up with cinematic advantage.

D&D 5E 5e Flanking - the good, the bad, and the broken?

This is from Sly Flourish's Blog: "Injecting cinematic advantage into your game is all about offering deals; trading in-world fiction and a skill check from players for advantage on their next attack." "The player rolls the check as part of their move or action. On a success, they get...

D&D 5E 5e Flanking - the good, the bad, and the broken?

Everyone should know that melee classes fall way behind spell casters in damage at higher levels. Flanking helps level the playing field for martials. Melee combat is inferior to ranged combat because you risk taking melee damage in return. Most monsters lack ranged attacks. And none of the...

D&D 5E Magical Secrets for the Bard that has everything...already covered by other party members :(

Druid spells like conjure animals and plant growth are pretty good. Plant growth is good for control. Conjure animals is OP if your DM lets you pick the animals. Volunteer not to pick pixies in exchange for picking the summons and get 8 wolves to do ~50 damage per round to a single target.

D&D 5e AL other players want to pitch in to get a campaign?

Last time I checked the D20play guy was doing the Frostmaiden campaign. I know he did Avernus as well. So he might do the Witchlight campaign in the future.

D&D 5e AL other players want to pitch in to get a campaign?

What time zone are you looking for? If you don't mind being on stream there are a couple of DMs on Roll20 that I'm pretty sure do pickup AL games or at least did at one time. One is D20play and the other is Daddywarrbux. They are both on YouTube and they were both free at the time I was...

D&D General D&D Party Fanboys and Girls are Great. (DM Advice)

Wow, that story didn't end how I imagined. I thought the party would spurn the young admirer and cause him/her to turn against the party and become the BBEG that knows all their strengths and weaknesses. . .

    Big book or multiple smaller?

Zweihander RPG core rulebook is 600 pages and sells for $65 list price but around $30 on Amazon. I browsed through it and it was impressive in size but not unwieldy.
