A bullet can create a massive exit wound. Easily large enough to "fit your ENTIRE HAND IN", depending on the nature of the amunition. But to the thread...I think guns work the way they do for game reasons. Not simulationist ones.

The very first published module for D&D 5e, Hoard of the Dragon Queen, has a set-piece duel with a bad guy who specifically attacks his opponent once he is down. This has been an acknowledged tactic in 5e from the start. :)

In AD&D, wading through piles of normal human opponents (like guards) was made much easier by spells which made you entirely immune to attacks from non-magical weapons such as Protection from Normal Missiles.

Dungeon Craft (youtube channel) gives a very good and balanced review of the new book. And I largely agree with it. There's great stuff in there. But 5e D&D is poorly suited for many types of horror. YMMV

I think this would be a fantastic trap if it was guarding something important. For example, this is a dungeon competition hosted by an organization. At the bottom of the pit is the trophy.

Hmm. If elves use magic to hunt their food, then the prey animals would have to evolve magical defenses or go extinct. So many interesting possibilities...

I'm a 1st level OD&D Wizard with low CON. So I think 1 hp of damage for me is any fatal wound.
