D&D General Pick your PHB (Ancestries)

i really feel people need to get past the one Very Specific Origin warforged have in ebberon because the artificial being archetype is otherwise very popular.

because there must be dozens upon dozens of dozens of games with that same basic boring selection of the standard popular species, and if i wanted to design a campaign that's just a little bit unique and doesn't include all or any of them why is that not my right? players aren't obligated to...

Sure, sure, there are just some conversations here that have left me with the impression that some people think compromise is a one sided thing where you get your way as you wanted

I do agree with what you say here but would just like to caveat on this one point, that they can talk to their GM does not inherently mean they will get what they want even with a compromising GM, sometimes what they desire simply runs counter to the GMs desired intentions for their setting.

    D&D General Batman class

Never did see him turn up or leave class, he was either there or he wasn’t, until you turned your back.

the game does exist, that's true, but ask yourself, with everything in it, is it coherent? is it consistent? are there themes? or is it simply a big pile of mashed together concepts and aesthetics that Wizards thought would entice people to buy another sourcebook? taken as a whole of what it...

a world, with a distinct theme, and tone, and vibe. any mood the GM is aiming for, asking what 'curation' is aiming for is like asking what 'storywriting' or 'decorating' is aiming for, there's as many answers as there are creators. you see curation as a building being demolished, we see it as...

what is there to explain? curation is done to try achieve certain flavour, tone and feel, to try create something more than the sum of it's parts, and what's not included can speak just as much if not more than what is included, if i'm trying to make my game feel like an old middle earth world...

D&D General [+] For (hypothetical) 6e: Which arcane caster class should be the "simple" one?

agreed, and it's not like you couldn't replicate 90% of the wizard experience with just a sorcerer subclass that has a spellbook and a spell school specialization choice leaving a no gimmicks pure spellcasting focused mage to be the 'simple caster'

D&D General [+] For (hypothetical) 6e: Which arcane caster class should be the "simple" one?

even if you only ever gave them level 1 spell slots, there are a ton of good and great 1st level utility spells and just let them agonizing blast cantrip spam for damage. Edit: alarm, animal friendship, bane, beast bond, bless, command, comprehend languages, create/destroy water, detect magic...

see, i feel like you're the one treating your character like a chess piece, cause you're not respecting their perspective and POV in the world, you're just treating them as a piece to be moved as you see fit for your goals, i don't care about challenging the player, not in any sense you're...

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

emotions aren't logical, people don't 'choose' who they fall in love with, elf or human or otherwise also, it's not like we humans as a whole just abandoned taking cats and dogs and mice as pets because we know in ten years or so they're going to end up dying, we do it anyway and cherish the...

no, but see, there's that emotional possessiveness i was just talking about, you'd like to believe your character was more sensible than that, that they'd see through the ruse, that they wouldn't buy the coloured water, but part of roleplaying is accepting the scenario you are presented with...

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

i always kinda fell on the side that 100~years being elf maturity is more a social standard life experience thing, like, elves have such a long lifespan that a 'mere' 20, 50 or 80 years experience is still kiddo numbers in their books, those greenhorns haven't really had enough time to...

D&D General [+] For (hypothetical) 6e: Which arcane caster class should be the "simple" one?

disagree that the matter lies entirely with class, subclass can be a notable factor in adjusting complexity up or down.

tangentially, this kind of possessiveness of character autonomy is also partly why i think it's so hard to suggest a proper social mechanics system, because Oh no my character might be persuaded to do something i don't explicitly condone them wanting to do!
