i think they ought to bring back proper NPC classes, town guards and the like shouldn't be wet tissue paper against player characters and the most basic monsters.

there's a difference between mechanics being tied to setting like DS and BR and what we're talking about which is a setting designed in consideration of how the mechanics and system play out and what they imply about how the world works.

perhaps the current spell point system is a bit complex, but i think if the game was designed to use them as the base it would be far simpler than slots currently are.

alot of the 'conversion' for 5e just seemed to be 'well, these things are here now, part of the world, didn't arrive from anywhere overly specific but now they're included' 'what, but how did they get here?' 'they're here now!'

5.5 isn't too different from 5e, but seeing as there was never a proper 5e setting made in the first place that's a bit of a moot point don't you think?

dividing up the species into 'kingdoms' i'd personally go with: humans, tiefling and aasimar. dwarves and goliaths. orcs and halflings. elves. dragonborn. gnomes.

6th: arcane gate, chain lightning, create homunculus, globe of invulnerability, magic jar, programmed illusion, soul cage. 7th: create magen, crown of stars, dream of the blue veil, forcecage, mordenkainen's magnificent mansion, mordenkainens sword, project image, regenerate, resurrection...

i think the issue they were getting at is more GMs approving or denying the use of game components based on mostly arbitrary lines of categorization.

Look, i can respect wanting to stick to a setting’s lore, but for all the horror stories I’ve heard online about kender players being, well, kender players, I’m just a little surprised i still hear GMs choosing to enforce using kender over halflings in DL when a player wants to play a halfling.

short of actually banning them you mean? i mean, if you could go the route of banning them then i would give the solution of making specific subclasses for the remaining classes in order to replicate the features of said excluded fullcasters.

i think the real question is how low do you need to take the magic to feel 'low magic', like, especially with only humans around how much of the tone of low magic could you feasibly capture only using the three halfcasters and maybe warlock as your 'caster' that gives you eight classes to play...

i agree, but a more important factor than the characters being connected to each other is i think them having some anchoring connection to the local setting, so, okay sure, even if your character is a dragonborn from over a continent away, fine, but if that's true give us an answer for why did...

a political setting IMO would require at least in some part, nuanced social mechanics, and for people to use them
