Pre-3.X D&D Icons

AFGNCAAP

First Post
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone here could identify any "iconic" characters, items, creatures, or places that appeared in older versions of D&D/AD&D (pre-3E) rulebooks. I don't mean the people of named spells or items (like Mordenkainen or Murlynd), nor do I mean the names of pre-generated characters from modules, but those characters who popped up in art throughout the various editions, the sample dungeon maps in DMGs, or names of sample characters from the rulebooks, etc.

Here are some examples:
* Bargle the magic-user and Aleena the cleric from the red box Basic set.
* Emirikol the Chaotic of DMG-fame
* The sample dungeon from the 1st ed. AD&D DMG (which happened to be reproduced in the 3E DMG, & had a Dungeon adventure based in it).

I'd appreciate any info/guides/help/links/etc. that you can provide. Thanks!

2e had a female elven mage who kept coming up, but I forget her name. I remember her being in the initiative examples.

2E? you mean Rath the dwarf fighter, Delsenora the wizard, Beornhelm, Joinville the illusionist, Ragnar the thief, Cwell the Fine, Morrison the Multi-Faceted, Tarus Bloodheart, Thule, Rupert the half-elf, Gorus, Johann, Fiera the elf, Brondvrouw the gnome, Megarran, Drelb, and Targash? ;)

crack open your 1edADnD DMG (revised edition 1979)

there are a ton of them. given as examples for various rules. or in the cartoons/pics...like Emirikol.

in the A's vs. the B's combat you can pick out a bunch. ;)

Bargle and Aleena weren't in the Moldvay Red-book Basic D&D; that honor went to Margan Ironwolf the Fighter, Black Dougal the Thief, Silverleaf the Elf, and Sister Rebecca the Cleric.

(Silverleaf is I believe Jack Chick's inspiration for "Blackleaf" in his Dark Dungeons comic. Everytime I hear Silverleaf's name I hear an announcer at a horse-track saying it in my head - "and comin' around the corner is Black Dougal, Morgan Ironwolf, Sister Rebecca, and in last place is Silllllverleaf.") :)

Good old Gutboy Barrelhouse, from 1st Ed. DMG. A fighter of rather low level as I recall. Don't remember any particulars beyond that.

My old signature reminded us of the 2e iconics, many of which were mentioned by BOZ.

There were plenty in 1e describing intitative, a party with all "A" in thier name, and a party with "B" in their name. Gutboy was one of them.
