"You said you need some help? yes? Hulgyr can help. What is the problem you need solved?"

"Well met Hulgyr. I will get to the problem in a moment. Please, take a seat. You are a warrior I would guess."

Patlin said:
"I'm Ironwolf Kinkaid." A short man in full plate armor says, stepping up toward the merchant. "I'm a swordsman of some skill, I'm nobody's fool, I can take an order or give one. If you want someone reliable on this venture of yours, I'm your man."

"Ironwood Kinkaid. I am indeed hoping to find reliable people."

Rystil Arden said:
"We are Zaeryl Alant. We have access to a little bit of the hidden power of the multiverse, and thus we can summon powerful astral puppets to this plane of existence, among other things."

Ashin cocks his head to one side, as if trying to recall something. Eventually he nods. "Well met Zaeryl Alant."

Xael said:
"Greetings. I'm Almayce, a Priest of Gliran. And I would be interested in helping you."

"Thank you Almayce, Priest of Gliran."

"Hello, I am Eternity, seeker of enlightenment and percipacity. I bring a thirst for knowledge and experience as well as mental abilities honed through transcendance and meditation."

Ashin's gaze flickers over to Zaeryl before returning to the woman in front of him. "Greetings Eternity, seeker of enlightenment."

Ashin glances around the tavern to see if there are any more coming this way. When it seems tht he has everyone who is coming, he returns his attention to the group. He runs his gaze over the group once more and nods with satisfaction. The merchant offers anyone who would like one a drink. When everyone is settled and ready, he continues.

"As I mentioned I am a merchant here in Orussus. I have a contract with one of silver mines in Duvik. Duvik is a village, well small town really, in the Stonepike mountains. The silver comes in from Duvik once a month. About 6 weeks ago when a shipment came in we were told there had been some illness in Duvik. Over the next few weeks, I began to hear stories, rumours of terrible things; plague, madness, monsters the walking dead, demons. So a week before the next shipment was due, I sent one of my people with a couple of stout men up to Duvik to look around, and see that the next shipment came back safely. That was three weeks ago.

"A few days ago I had the opportunity to talk to someone from Duvik. Apparently, many have fled the town. The persons recall of events was hazy, but in accord with the stories that I had heard. They spoke of a plague, madness, monster stalking the streets and the dead working the mines driven by devils with whips.

"Something is going on in Duvik. I think that that is clear enough. But I think that the stories are as much a product of the superstitions and imagination of the people as anything. Duvik is an isolated place, far from the centres of learning and politics. The people are simple folk, and superstitious. They see kobolds under the bed and elementals in the every water pool. I think the answer is more mundane than they think, but perhaps more complicated.

"For that reason there is something I need to do."

Ashin takes a small leather tube from his belt and slides off the top third, revealing a plain iron rod. The rod is about 8 inches long and about half an inch in diameter.

"This is a truth rod; it prevents the holder from lying. Before we go any further, I am going to ask those who are interested to answer a simple question."

Ashin holds up his hand to forestall any questions.

"I perfectly understand if you do not wish to do it, and I will tell you the question before asking any of you to make your decision. The question is this: Do you own allegiance or debt to the Lord of Fallon, or to any that themselves own allegiance or debt to the Lord of Fallon.

"If you answer 'yes', then I must ask you to leave, with my thanks for your time."

Ashin give those who wish to leave time to do so. To those that remain he hands the rod and asks the question to each in turn.

ooc: Willpower check to be able to lie with the rod in hand. Use Invisible Castle or some other dice roller with the following 'name': LEWD1Ashin (But use your character's name, not Ashin.)

So we have, from Ashin perspective:
Hulgyr, male orc warrior,
Ironwolf Kinkaid, male human swordsman
Zaeryl Alant, male human psychic summoner
Almayce, male elf Priest of Gliran,
Eternity, female human psychic
* couldn't find Eternity on the list of approved characters. Is she pending?

Ironwolf grasps the rod firmly in his hand.

"I have had little to do with nobles of any flavor, and owe no allegiance to the Lord of Fallon. I am loyal to my friends, and if any of them owe allegiance to Fallon I know it not. Other than friends, my loyalties lie with ideals, not people. If you wish murder done on anyone, I will not help you, whether it be the Lord of Fallon or the meanest beggar. The two are the same to me. If you work against plague, monsters, and evil, as it sounds from your description of events, I would be glad to serve you... although the fee you offer is a token at best."

He hands the Truth Rod to whoever wishes to speak next.

Ashin Hanasisar, male human merchant

Ashin laughs, then quickly composes himself.

"No, no. Nothing like that Ironwolf. I rather hope that there will be no murdering done. So I appreiciate the sentiments you just expressed.

"I am just looking for answers, and my silver. As for the fee. Yes, well."

Ashins nods for a moment, thinking.

"It represents a significant part of what I would make on the shipment. Duvik is not a rich place, and the lives of the people up there are hard. I don't make a much in the way from the contract."

Ashin's brow furrows in thought again, but he adds nothing more.

"Well. Who is next for the rod?"

A short figure, 5 feet tall and stout like a Dwarf appears in the doorway of the Red Dragon Inn. Dressed in blood-stained hide armor, with a hooded cloak, the figure tucks his long spear down briefly to get it through the door, then stops to listen to the group across the room for a few minutes.

Nodding he pulls the cloak back from his head to reveal the young boyish features of a half orc. His features are subtle, aside from his oversized teeth, slightly pointed ears, and pug nose, there is little that betrays his heritage.

"I have no name, but that given by my tormentors" the boy relates. "but I wish no ill will here. I greet you Joe and ask only for a chance to earn some coin."

*Zaeryl steps forward and takes the rod.*

"Our allegiance belongs to no one, least of all this lord of whom we have not heard. However, the presence of devils, if true, is intriguing. Clearly beings such as they should not be allowed a foothold on this mortal plane. Though we agree with Ironwolf that the offered price is a pittance, the power gained from the exertion, and whatever treasure any oppressors have hoarded, will certainly make up the difference."

(OOC: Sadly, Zaeryl failed his save, so he is prevented from saying "Your rod has no power over me.")

Ironwolf looks back towards Michael, Vanitri, and Ros, hoping they are also interested in the job.

"What say you, friends? I know the pay isn't much, but still..."

Michael sips his cocoa, eyes serious.
"Judging from what I've heard -- and you'll pardon my long ears -- I think I may need to go, whether the pay is good or not."
He taps his medical bag.
"Sela does not yet grant me the power to cure disease, but herbs and simples will serve where my faith does not. I might be able to do a little against the walking dead as well."
He turns to Roslynn.
"Roslynn, have you made a decision?

(OOC: Ros, where are yooouuu [/echo])

Almayce grabs the rod. "I do not own any allegiance or debt to Lord of Fallon.", he says and puts the rod down.

The half orc senses that the eyes and ears of the others are on other things. Though he attempts to move quietly across the room to the bar, his long spear smacks against the wooden walls, the ceiling, and several other points along the way. A pale ale, if I may.

After all the others have handled the rod, Eternity grasps it in one hand and says, "Lord of where? Fallon? I have never heard of this Fallon, so no I owe no allegience to this Lord you speak of. Why is that important?"

[ooc: I got the emails from both Nimisgod and KO giving the okay on Eternity, I'll check with them why she is not on the list yet. btw, if you feel a bit awkward with so many psions just let me know and I'll hop into the next adventure. Zaeryl and Eternity have similar abilities so she might feel overshadowed anyways]

"I'd know who I'd be serving first." Joe says.

OOC: It's a bar rule that you introduce yourself.
