This Weekend at the Boxoffice: 2006.07.03

Superman rules at the boxoffice 84 million from opening and 52 million just for the weekend but will it have enough staying power? Between 260 and 300 million to make, it may be a bomb at the boxoffice as other movies hit the screen.

see www.boxofficemojo.com for details

1. “Superman Returns,” $52.15 million.
2. “The Devil Wears Prada,” $27 million.
3. “Click,” $19.4 million.
4. “Cars,” $14 million.
5. “Nacho Libre,” $6.2 million.
6. “The Lake House,” $4.5 million.
7. “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift,” $4.4 million.
8. “Waist Deep,” $3.3 million.
9. “The Break-Up,” $2.8 million.
10. “The Da Vinci Code,” $2.3 million.

Time to keep track of the movies I see this year but think I will do it a different way...anything I go to that I feel is a waste of time is a 5 or below, 6 not a complete waste, 7 a good two+ hours spent, an 8 a good two hours I will tell my friends about, 9 something I will consider seeing again, 10 will see again.

Rank 10/10: NA
Rank 09/10: V For Vendetta
Rank 08/10: NA
Rank 07/10: Underworld: Evolution - Lucky Number Slevin - X-Men: The Last Stand - Superman Returs
Rank 06/10: Bloodrayne
Waste of time: Slither - Tokyo Drift

Other figures for Superman:

Domestic: $84,208,000 81.0%
+ Foreign: $19,800,000 19.0%
---------------------------------
= Worldwide: $104,008,000

what I find interesting is how it compares to other movies released at the same time.

from boxofficemojo
(snip)Among recent Independence Day starts, the Man of Steel's estimated $52.2 million weekend trailed War of the Worlds' $64.9 million last year and Spider-Man 2's $88.2 million in 2004 but was ahead of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines' $44 million in 2003. Fellow Warner Bros. and DC Comics revival, Batman Begins, grabbed $48.7 million in its first weekend and ultimately grossed $205.3...(snip)

It also has to go up against Pirates this weekend, so I think it is following the Batman Begins track.

The surprise of the weekend, to me, was The Devil wears Prada. I did not even know about this one, sre it is a date flick but 27 million! I am becoming a Anne Hathaway fan, she is that good.

My order of movies...

V for Vendetta
Cars
Thank You For Smoking
Hard Candy
X-Men 3
Superman Returns

Superman Returns will probably sink lower as I see more films as it was the bottom feeder by a few rungs here.

No question for me - Superman Returns is tied for the best movie I've seen this year (along with District B13). V for Vendetta I also enjoyed. However, I do expect that Pirates 2 will be right at the top.

Not like the crap that was X-Men 3.

I wasn't too pleased with the trailers, but once i sat down and read the plot line, i was a bit more pleased. I did not plan on seeing it on release date, but my wife and i rolled a die to see what movie we were going to go to...and Superman won.

It's actually decent. Much better than X-men 3 (an abominable mess of editings).
