Hey Scott, just wondering how feasible it would be to pack modules with a dungeon tiles set for the major encounters. They'd be reusable, which IMHO is one of the problems w/ the Fantastic Locations maps, A DM could add them to his Dungeon Tiles, or use them for his own adventures, even if he didn't use the official adventure whole cloth, and you wouldn't have to do rooms that already have an appropriate tile in one of the sets, just list it in the text. I think with a $12-$15 price point for the modules and an increase of $7 to $10 dollars to include the tiles you'd appeal to more people as far as adventures and the price would be between $19 and $25, still reasonable considering black and white modules are starting to hit the $20 range anyway, especially if it uped the number sold...so what do you think?

It is a good idea and something we have talked about.

From a production view this would be posible. Adventure design would have a pretty big influence on cost because they need to be able to make the tiles work with the adventure. As long as they could make sure that all the maps in the adventure could be made from the 6 sheets of 2-sided tiles it would work. My big concern would be if they had to make the adventure watered down to work with the tiles.

6 tiles has an MSRP of $9.95 and a 32 page adventure (like Shadows of the Last War) sells for $9.95 so in theroy but (don't hold me to it) we could do this for around $20.

What about adding minis so it played right out of the box?

To turn the question around: I currently use Dungeon Tiles to "fit together" maps in adventures. How much would gridded paper maps force up the price of the adventures? And of the Expedition books? As a side-question, how about DDM-packs designed for use with specific adventures/Expeditions?

We did maps in Red Hand of Doom and Shattered Gates of Slaughtergarde. Maps are relatively expensive on their own but we have made it work to include them with adventures in the past.

It would be cool to be able to sell a "play out of the box" modules that had the adventure, maps/tiles and minis.

If you pulled this off, with the tiles, you would be "da man" in my book as far as marketing adventures better. I would definitely buy more and would be willing to pay in the range of $30 for one of these "boxed sets"...hint, hint. ;)

How many of you have:

1) Bought or used a Fantastic Locations product?

2) If you did how did you use it? A) Roleplaying B) Skirmish c) Both

3) If you used it for RPG play did you use it beyond the encounters it came with?

4) if you exclusively RP with it would it bother you to havethe skirmish symbols on it?

Me! Me!

2) If you did how did you use it? A) Roleplaying B) Skirmish c) Both

Both, although mostly for roleplaying.

3) If you used it for RPG play did you use it beyond the encounters it came with?

For most of the maps, I've never bothered using the encounters they came with; I've found the adventures underwhelming, actually. The maps I found most useful were the generic ones - ruined keep, forest road, mithral caves, waterfall cave. Things like the lava map just wasn't coming up.

My PCs are very sick of being ambushed on that road! :)

4) if you exclusively RP with it would it bother you to havethe skirmish symbols on it?

Actually, I find it harder to RP without the skirmish symbols. This really bothered me when I was using the 2nd half of the ruined keep map. I really prefer difficult terrain (and other sorts) being called out. The victory areas don't bother me; they're pretty inconspicuous.

Cheers!

I've purchased all of the FL series, and had at least some use out of all of them.

The maps all get used for skirmish occasionally, and from regularly to never for RPG, depending on the map. I tend to use the more ordinary maps (like the road, or fairly plain cave maps) more often than the exotic ones, but I sometimes find a way to work a more exotic one into a game.
3) If you used it for RPG play did you use it beyond the encounters it came with?
I haven't used any of the encounters that came with the maps. The maps are used with encounters I've generated myself.
4) if you exclusively RP with it would it bother you to havethe skirmish symbols on it?
I'm pretty indifferent. The skirmish symbols don't get in the way much for RPG, although I did recently have a new player get pretty confused by the "Victory Area" in the dungeon the PCs were exploring!

I would personaly pay upto $30 for high quality, pretty, tough and durable maps. The problem with the current FL and Starter PAck Maps is they rip, and far to easily. The Dreamblade Super-cool play mat is a great example of what I am talking about. It comes in a tube and is cheap enough to purchase.

I like the skirmish symbols identifying the difficult terrain, but I do *not* like the start/victory areas. I do not play skirmish and these areas cause the map to look like it was designed for something other than what I'm using it for, which is annoying.

Thanks for asking!

(Oh, and I really like your idea of tiles (or battle maps), minis and the adventure all in one.)

Check it out, the constraints of making the 2-sided six sheet tiles work would be lessened as long as you also drew from the Dungeon Tiles already out there. You guys have already covered alot of ground with the sets that are already out, and I wouldn't waste that...I'd use it to supplement the above idea. I would save the included tiles for special rooms or encounter areas in the module that you won't be able to get through purchasing dungeon tiles, this ups the value to both dungeon tile users as well as those playing the modules.
