A question for you!

A few of us are beginning to write up our backgrounds. I am scribbling things together ... but perhaps the time has come for you to decide what the setting will be? Forgotten Realms? Greyhawk? Homebrew?

You know, if Svirfs didn't have such a high LA, I think I would almost always play one.

Well ... how about a chaos gnome? You could be a Wilder instead of a Psion. Seems to fit ... sorta :)

Okay ... posting a preliminary background text for the Dream Dwarf pc.

[sblock=history]Qorewaurinjee Earthcaller

Qorewaurinjee Earthcaller, or "Qore" (as he is most often called), was first-born child of a normal family of dream dwarves of reasonable standing and respectability. Both his parents had pursued religious studies for a little while in the particular druidic realm the dream dwarves pursue and spent some of their time immersing themselves in the “Earth Dream”.
When he was a young dwarf Qore showed promise in many areas. He was stronger, tougher and wiser than the average member of his race, showing the normal, average interest in the common things dream dwarves usually do. He went through the usual “entry level” training in the arts of war and showed promise that he could be a reasonably success in the field.
Yet as he grew older his parents began to notice that Qore began to become more pensive, quiet and thoughtful than a dwarf his age usually was and beyond the expected bounds for mental privacy shared among the dwarves, and he began to display a certain “something” in his everyday life. A slight “oddness” and “standing out”. He could often be found singing to himself and pouring through old tomes rather than attending to the normal religious duties expected amongst his people.
As time went by this trait began to be noticed by the elders of their family as well, so one day they pulled him aside to speak with him about many things. They were very surprised with the few answers they were able to draw out of him and feared a possible kind of mental imbalance. And thus his extended family brought his situation before some of the religious elders of their clan.
Amongst the numbers of the clan was a very wise old dwarf who had spent many, many years adventuring and had grown to become a spellcaster of high renown in both the arcane and divine schools of magic. He also had acquired a very respected reputation for being a wise, insightful man. Qore came at his request and the two of them had a long, long talk. That experienced knower of souls saw that the soul of Qore had been born with an inborn talent for not only channeling the arcane, but that his inner senses were amazingly tuned to both beauty and the created order.
When his family members came to the old man after Qore left and asked what his judgment on the matter was, he replied that the inborn talent the lad possessed was such that it would have difficulty initially flourishing in a dwarven societal setting. When asked to explain his assessment and give direction as to what should be done specifically, the old man thought it best that Qore pursue specialized training of some sort: either in a monastery to be trained in the art of inner stillness achieved through physical and mental discipline, or in a bardic school specializing not so much in the rapscallion side of the bard as the arcane and lore-based sides.
The elder thought Qore would do well at either place, but suggested as a matter of opinion that the bardic school would be a choice more in keeping with the deepest parts of the young dwarf's internal makeup. It was for this that he had suggested Qore be schooled away from the clan – for while dwarven (and especially dream dwarven) societies could potentially provide a monastic environment, they could not provide a school of bards specializing in ancient lore and the arcane. So it was decided and arrangements were made.
One week before Qore was to leave for a famous bardic school known as “The Region of the Summer Stars” he began to have strange dreams. These dreams contained “unseen images and silent melodies” as he later said. They contained sounds, harmonies, songs and melodies in words he neither knew nor had ever heard, together with things he could not put into words. “There were colors that do not exist where we all live....” he would say quietly before falling silent.
While studying in the school, located in the deserts of southern Faerthalos, where he excelled and finished in the top part of the class, his studies and questions eventually brought him to the existence of some of the higher manifestations of bardic magic and song. He learned of the the people known as “Sublime Chords”, and the “Seekers of the song”, the words of creation as well as the “Troubadours of the Stars”, one of whom had originally inspired the foundation of that particular bardic school. His path was set.
Since then Qore has decided to head to the south to the Scarlet Islands and the Hetlands in pursuit of bardic schools and knowledge that could aid him in his search, and has recently arrived in Torgmorn....[/sblock]

Awesome. Can't seem to play IRL, so I was hoping we'd eventually be able to play a game online, though I admit I wasn't thinking of Email when I had that thought though.
I've never played online *ever* so this will be interesting for me :p

Okay, I've put more thought into classes/races I would consider being - there are four total.

  • Archivist (HoH) [kinda like a cross between the cloistered cleric and a bard; I'd likely be a human or maybe something really offbeat.]
  • Dragon Shaman (PHBII) [an aura/divine tank class. I'd totally be a kobold for race.]
  • Shugenja (ComDiv) [elementalist divine class. Might be a genasi or human]
  • Spirit Shaman (ComDiv) [Might try this with an elf subrace or a human, with maybe a level of barbarian or scout thrown in for flavour.]

Any thoughts on how those choices might fit in with the party? Basically, I'm fine with any of the choices above - just gimme feedback, and I'll work around it :)

Oh, and thanks for the welcome from everyone :)

cheers,

Hmm ...it wouldn't hurt to have someone else with the combo of tank and divine spells, so Dragon Shaman sounds nice! Only problem with a kobold is if we go into any towns the rest of us might have the dickens of time preventing you from being strung up. :\

I like the idea of the spirit shaman with a level (or two) of barbarian! Of course, this assumes we get PAST first level and are not fed to the otyughs or whatever. :\

Archivist would be helpful, but there is the non-combat side of things. Healing magic is a plus, of course.

Shugenga is the only one I would say definitely "not a good idea" to - as far as that goes we have two psions, both decent "no tankers augmented by cool special abilities" sorts.

Hope this helps a little.

Main problem with Dragon Shaman is they don't actually have any divine spells. Or spells at all. Great back up healer, not so great primary.

About the Dragon Shaman -- that was my main problem with being one as well; decent tank, but no *true* healing powers. But the urge to play a Kobold was almost irresitable

Seems like Archivist or Spirit Shaman might be the two I want to focus on. I'm going to post a thread in the Rules forum asking about peoples experiences with them.

thanks,
