[4e][Paragon] Kombat Kraziness (closed)

Walking Dad said:
I would really like to play a twf ranger. All my other characters (sounds more than it is) are either divine or arcane and all rangers I have seen so far are ranged.

Dare I to play a twf scimitar wielding drow... ;)
Funny, but I'd been thinking the same thing about melee rangers.

I've updated the first post; I -think- I got everything (which means I've almost certainly missed something...)
The order is just a suggestion.
I put myself first just because I'm worried about scheduling conflicts, my classes will start again in a week or two and I'll get busier and busier. (kinda selfish... but...)
Since WD seems to have already built his encounter (!) I put him second. Jemal (who offered to go first) was put in third.
And people who're busy now or haven't expressed a preference (everybody else) can go after that.
[It's just a suggestion of course, we can discuss.]

In terms of the openness vs. surprise thing I'm thinking that what I'll do is make a thread (in plots in places, or in the main 4e thread if I feel masochistic...) detailing the encounter (and hopefully getting feedback).
So it'll be open in the sense that people can review the DM's "pregame notes" and see what happened and why but it won't be open in the sense that you get "advance notice" about what you'll be fighting.
I'll put a [Kombat Kraziness] tag on it when I do that.

That's just one way to do it of course. We could post everything in advance (WD style)... I'm worried that my inner-munchkin would come out if I knew exactly what I'd be fighting...

For character creation I think we just follow pg 143 of the DMG; at least for the first game or two.

With two strikers claimed, and possibly a leader, I'll sign up for the controller slot. Pencil me in for a tiefling wizard for the first round.

XP budgets for Grotto:
Per the DMG (pg56) "hard encounters" can be 3-52-4 levels higher than the parties level.

Three hard encounters for a 17th level party would be 19-21st level (2400 - 3200xp) per character per encounter. That averages to 2,800 (20th level) per party member per encounter.

3 encounters + 8 characters -> 2800x8x3=~67,000 xp. --> XP Budget for Grotto of the Kua-toa

Maybe we should have a rule that you "shouldn't spend more than 150% of the average amount" on one encounter?
(So the max per-encounter amount for Grotto would be ~33,000)

Hmm, hard encounters. I was trying to squeeze my ideas into the normal amount.

I was thinking of an elven Cleric/Divine Oracle, or a human tactical warlord focused on powers that give people basic attacks.

And I think we're full! Math is my enemy.
Welcome Evilhalfing! :)

(Should we take an alternate or two, just as players?)

We can play around with xp levels. For the record the A3 encounter that I was referring two is for 5 1st level characters, and has 1250 xp (admittedly with some caviates) -> that's the equivalent of a 6th level encounter (250 xp per member).

In my example 33,000 for 8 characters is 4,125 roughly equivalent to 22nd level. Which means that the upper bound is basically the same as A3 (assuming 1st level vs 6th level is equivalent to 17th level vs 22nd level).

I've seen posts on the boards where a well tuned party of cruised through A3 in about 5 rounds. No fatalities.
And I've seen TPKs.

I really have no idea whether the budgets we're talking about will fall into one area or the other (I mean... 8 pcs means 8 action points, 20+daily powers, --> potentially we're seeing the PCs drop 16 daily powers in the first round of combat...
That's a lot of hurt.).

I envision KK encounters to be the "final encounter of a major story arc"; epic stuff (not epic level but...). And obviously, there will be a mix of encounters among the three, if someone puts a lot of xp into one encounter the other two will necessarily be easier).

When I post the thread I will definitely ask for feedback from the community. If people think the encounters are unfair I'll almost certainly adjust down.

And, of course, anything that I do in the first encounter you'll get to do back to me when I'm a player and you're a DM.

Party composition for KK1 (Grotto of the Kua-toa)

From the He-can't-do-basic-math department:
So DM + 8 players = 9 people (I figured that out all by myself ... )
Lets take one more permanent or temporary.

Defender - Evilhalfling
Leader - Victim
Striker - industrygothica, Walking Dad
Controller - Redclaw

Undecided: renau1g, Jemal, + one more

As I already got an encounter idea, my main problem is my mapping skill.
