White Plume Mountain - your experiences?

First Post
Eighteenth thread of a series on the old classic Dungeons & Dragons adventure modules. It is interesting to see how everyone's experiences compared and differed.

Did you Play or DM this adventure (or both, as some did)? What were your experiences? Did you complete it? What were the highlights for your group?

I ran this one for a group way back in '82 or so.

It has some classic bits and some silly bits (the Sesame Street Golems - "One of these things is not like the other, one of these things does not belong...").

My group, of course, kept the weapons. Blackrazor was a major part of that campaign from that point on. At that point in time, I barely knew what I was doing, so I can't recall all that much of how the game went... Though I think this module could be redone pretty nicely for an up-to-date game, reusing the maps and some of the challenges.

I've run this module more then any other. I've also run the return to as well.

Its a fun exploration with lots of really cool rooms and encounters. It is not a meat grinder which is good. The intelligent weapons where always fun, Whelm became an NPC it was so poluliar.

need i say it... i liked the other cover better....

i ran this one multiple times for multiple groups.

also read the return and converted it to OD&D but haven't used it yet.

the Dungeon magazine revisit is worth looking at too...

I've heard of a game where a PC had three Blackrazors.

Parts of this haven't aged well. In particular, some of the riddles are simplicity itself -- but it's still a fun romp.

This is the AD&D module that I have the fondest memories of (I played in it when I was 14? [and that was 25 years ago!]).

The weapons were cool. For some reason, I thought the induction hallway was super cool. And the inverted ziggurat was the coolest!

Now, looking back on it, it seems to be just another monty haul dungeon (although a well-crafted monty haul dungeon)... :\

Ah, yes, this was the FIRST D&D module I ever ran. :) I ran it for three 1st level Basic D&D characters, before I knew the difference between D&D and AD&D. They got past the Sphinx by answering the riddle, and then ran into Green Slime and melted like the Wicked Witch.

Over the years I re-ran it, and something different happened each time - but nobody EVER finished the darned thing. One guy got himself a Flesh Golem Manservant and then promptly left the place. He really took care of that Golem - made him charge of this castle and lands, too. (Yes, I know, but we were 12 then and didn't even own a Monster Manual - we didn't know that a Flesh Golem was like Frankenstein).

Great module, and a perfect example of an Epic Quest all under one roof.

Got some kills with a non munckin group. Green Slime in the water. and the mud room with failing cube of force.

Also played with two other groups and did have fun dming it or running it.
