Earthshaker! - your experiences?

First Post
Thirty-second thread of a series on the old classic Dungeons & Dragons adventure modules. It is interesting to see how everyone's experiences compared and differed.

Did you Play or DM this adventure (or both, as some did)? What were your experiences? Did you complete it? What were the highlights for your group?

I had this one but kind of felt the idea was a bit wonky to run, and never did.
Ditto.

I mean, being a fan of the Dragonlance gnomes I have no problems with machines in a fantasy setting, but the Earthshaker was a tad over the top. Did I say a tad? It's a giant robot! Look at that cover!

The idea was a little over the top, but the advenuter behind it was worse. I really think they could have come up with a better adventure around this huge robot.....

I turned this into a short story for my English class in high school! :)

Never actually ran it in real life, though.

Wasn't there a recent Dungeon adventure featuring a scenario set in a giant robot?

So it wasn't even possible to say it was a giant golem to run the game? It was really a giant robot? Like, gated in from a sci-fi setting?

Built by gnomes actually. The module had maps of its insides and part of the adventure would have been there.

I ran it. Although it has a slight goofiness to it, it handles pretty well as an adventure. Players take on the fantasy equivelent of a terrorist team that's trying to take control of a giant machine.

The first time I ran was just after I got it. It went okay - I was younger then, so I had considerably lower expectations.

The second time I ran it was in the late nineties, after converting it to 2e. I took a lot of elements from the first Die Hard film, and things went considerably better.

It's still on the list of games I plan to run in my 3e game, when my players hit 15th level or so.
