Some New Warlock Invocations

Thanks for the compliments and feedback. :)

Here's the revised version of the fiend-binding invocations, as promised. I hope you like them.

Binding the Fiendish Servant
Lesser; 4th

All demons and devils exist in a cruel hierarchy where power is the only currency. Using the dark powers within you, you can compel a demon or devil to give you obeisance. You can use this invocation in two ways, either to call a demon or devil and then attempt to enslave it, or to enslave a demon or devil that is already present.

Calling: You can call any demon or devil with HD equal to or less than your invoker level (maximum 5). The casting time of this version of the invocation is 1 full round and the range is close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels). As a calling effect, the duration is instantaneous, there is no saving throw, and spell resistance does not apply. Once the creature appears (at the place you designate, within range and line of sight), you must then use this invocation to attempt to enslave it (see below), use some other means to control or trap the creature, or it is set free. A freed creature can chose to immediately return to its plane of origin (even if it normally lacks the means to do so) or it can remain, in which case it must use other means if it later wishes to return to its native plane. The calling version of this invocation can only be used once per day.

Enslavement: You can attempt to enslave a demon or devil with HD equal to or less than your invoker level (maximum 5) and within 60 feet. This invocation has a casting time of 1 standard action, is an enchantment (compulsion) effect, and spell resistance applies. Instead of a normal saving throw, you and the subject are locked in a contest of wills and make opposed will saves. If a tie occurs, you and the subject are locked in mental conflict for 1 full round, during which time you are both flat-footed and neither of you can move or take any other action. This contest continues until one of you wins or concedes. If the subject wins, it is free, and you can't attempt to enslave it again for 24 hours (you can try again if you merely failed to beat its spell resistance, however). If you win, the creature is bound to serve you loyally, even to its death, for 1 day per level, until you set it free, or until slain. The only limit to this bondage is that you can't command the creature to kill itself, though you can order it into dangerous situations.

This effect can't be dispelled, but a banishment, dismissal, break enchantment, limited wish, wish or miracle can free the creature. The nature of the creature's binding prevents it from using any such means to free itself, however. At the end of the creature's service, it may immediately return to its native plane, but only if it was called with this invocation. You can't enslave summoned monsters with this invocation, as they are not true creatures.

You can never command more than one creature at a time with any version of this invocation. If you call or attempt to control a second creature with this invocation, you lose your hold on the first creature. Great care should be used in calling and enslaving fiends. Even the weakest of these creatures resent being forced into servitude, and if the opportunity to take vengeance upon a Warlock who enslaved them ever presents itself, they will likely take it, especially if they were treated poorly.

Binding the Greater Fiendish Servant
Greater; 6th

As Binding the Fiendish Servant, except that you can call and/or enslave demons and devils whose HD is no greater than your invoker level (maximum 10). These fiends are much more powerful and useful servants than lesser fiends, but they are also a much greater risk. Being forced into servitude by a mere mortal is not a slight that such a being will soon forget.

Binding the Dark Fiendish Servant
Dark; 9th

As binding the fiendish servant, except that you can call and/or enslave demons and devils whose HD is no greater than your invoker level (maximum 20). These are among the most powerful of fiends, and not only would enslaving them be very difficult for even the most powerful warlock, they have long memories and short tempers and will most certainly take terrible revenge for their enslavement, given the opportunity. Only the most powerful, foolish, or desperate warlocks dare to enslave these beings. Any warlock who manages to humiliate a balor or pit fiend by forcing it into his sevice had better beware the terrible enemy he has just made.

The only thing I'd add to your invocations is to add some more flavour text and effects like dark puppetry has. You're obviously good at that, so whip up something for the other ones.

Your Binding invocations are great. Dual use, to fit in with the way invocations work. They're perhaps a bit powerful, but the aspect of pissing a demon or devil off should balance it out if a DM has any sense.

I really like these invocations. Dark Puppetry is simply awsome. I really like the fiendish servents as well.

The only thing I would suggest is to make it much easier for the warlock to be stuck in a mental battle. Maybe if the warlock had to beat the fiend by atleast five points in order to force the fiend to do his bidding. The same would go for the fiend.

Another would maybe make the opposed rolls a 2 out of 3 contest. So the mental battle lasted at least two rounds.

I am guessing that all instances of level mean invoker level. So a eighth level warlock can only summon a fiend within 35 feet. And can only enslave a fiend for 5 days.

Other than those points, I real really like these invocations and will definitly *yoink!* them. :)

I'll see what I can do. ;)

I'm glad you like it. :)

The revenge factor is the main reason I made it a calling effect. Originally I was thinking of doing a summon monster invocation, limited to evil outsiders, but then I realised that a warlock could just continually summon such beings with no consequence, which would be terribly unabalanced. I wanted to allow warlocks to get demonic minions, but for it to also be a risky venture. These minions have powerful spell-like abilities of their own, so getting one of these invocations actually grants multiple powers to the warlock, but the risk should help balance that out. A fiend could always resist the warlock's control, and won't be happy with the warlock for the attempt. An enemy could also free a warlock's minion, turning that advantage against him.

That's a good idea.

Yes, all references to "level" are actually to invoker level.
