Trying again: What would it take to get _you_ to use core only?

What bonus would be enough to get you to seriously consider the core-only option?

Any of the above would be enough to at least get me to consider it. For the extra feats, free LA or an extra level I'd be almost certain to restrict myself to core, so I checked those for the poll..

The thing is, while there's lots of stuff I'd like to try from the various books (especially Tome of Battle), there's still stuff I'd like to try from PHB only, so yeah, sure, I'll be an aasimar or take bonus feats, if you're offering.

I won't ask "why would you ever do this?" in order not to derail your thread in General Discussion, but I'm very curious, so I'm starting a new thread, and would appreciate your input.

There are just too many holes that non-core books fill, even if only in bits and pieces. In particular there are expanded skill uses scattered through the Complete and Races of books. Since I like playing skill monkeys, the game just isn't as much fun without all these different ways of doing things. I've never been too excited by a game with a main focus on combat, and skills make for characters that have interesting stuff to do besides fighting.

Just in case you're wondering, I almost never pick base or prestige classes outside of the two core books; when I do, it's usually that battlefield powerhouse known as the Scout.

22 pt buys as with a 25 pt buy but an LA+1 race.

Standard array 13/12/11/10/9/8 for LA+2 race and as 25 pt buy.

Just to clarify, it's the elite array (15/14/13/12/10/8) for a +1 LA and non-elite array (13/12/11/10/9/8) for a +2 LA, all with approval.

For example, we have one player with a grey orc (+1 LA) from Forgotten Realms; he's fairly balanced.

Another player is a four armed sahuagin but with a standard array of 11/11/11/10/10/10. We've played from 1st to 12th so far and he still thinks he's weak (despite the arms).

A couple of quick questions:

1. What are "character points"? I'm assuming you mean ability score points for a point buy system. Can you please confirm?

2. How do you deal with treasure? Is a player who takes a bonus not allowed to pick up non-core loot? If they do, do they lose their bonus(es)? Or does this only apply to class/level/feat/spell options?

...A coherent story?
...Non-combat encounters?
...Encounters that require thought or planning?
...Wizard/Sorceror Familiar rules that make them a class feature rather than a class drawback?

Also, what is a "Character Point?" If I choose 8 of them, can I have an extra Dark Eldar Warrior cohort? There's not much good wargear for only 8 points. (Well, none that I didn't already take.)

The only issue I'd have with playing Core-only is a lack of options -- I may not be able to make the character I want to play. In terms of power, I don't think compensation is necessary. For me.

But if some players want it because other players in the group are using all sorts of splatbooks that they can't, I think any of the suggestions would suffice.

I'm Cleo!

I agree with Cleo. For the most part I'm the DM, but the rare chances I get to play in a game I usually play a Cleric or a Rogue. So I have no problem playing core, but given the choice I'll pull feats and such from splat books to allow me to "unvanilla" the character concept a bit.

That and I have yet to find a rogue replacement base class that fits my style.

I voted none because it wouldn't take any of those things to get me to consider a core-only game. I would run or play in a core only game without any of those benefits if I thought the setting, gaming group, and general reason for going core-only were good enough to capture my interest.
Same for a non-core-only campaign.
