Can Someone Else Please Buy Some Adverts!

Heh. Dang you and your solo advertising campaign. I have just purchased your book.

Excellent!

And in my defence, I only realised I was going solo when I found myself alone in no-mans land armed only with a whistle, a stick, and a six-shot Webley, the rest of the roleplaying industry having apparently remained back in the trench.

In fact, here is the review I posted of it before Christmas...

-------------------------------------------------

I just finished reading Game Night by EN World's own Jonny Nexus and it is a laugh riot.

I'm not sure if any of you have read Jonny's website Critical Miss, but the "falling on your ass laughing" calibre humour that he's always brought to the site translates well into this book.

It is about a group of Gods (literally) playing a fantasy roleplaying game using mortals as their PC's. The concept seems pretty easy to come up with...but I'm happy to say the author really delivers :)

Basically, the Chief God has a really epic, poetic drama-filled adventure in mind, and it keeps getting sidetracked by the fact that his players (the rest of the pantheon) are for the most part petty, rules-lawyering yahoos, bored goofs who can't retain any information from moment to moment, snide know-it-alls with a sense of entitlement...and the lone awesome gamer for whom you get the feeling the adventure was designed.

The "adventure" itself is pretty compelling , but the real gold in the book is recognizing how many of these exact "Group Dynamic Disasters" I myself have been in over the years.

This one sentence sets the tone I think...

[bq]The ride up the Valley had been long and tiresome, and the party's spirits had been further dampened by an unfortunate dispute over the bill at the inn in which they'd spent the night. But now they were within sight of that which they'd spent many moons travelling towards.

The Gate[/bq]

And unfortunate dispute over the bill at an inn...the very picture of an Epic Fantasy:)

Anyway, the writing is top-notch, the story is hilarious and the book is very reasonably priced.

Go that Amazon link and buy one for your DM for Christmas :)

You mean you're not charged by the click? Crazy.

Well to be fair, it costs Morrus the same to serve a page with my ad on regardless of whether or not someone clicks on it.

So this way, the risk that my advert might not be compelling (either through ad design, or for being for an unwanted product) is borne my me; I pay to have it served to the user and it's my problem if they then ignore it.

If I'd paid per click, then Morrus would be assuming my risk, which wouldn't really be fair.

Google AdWords only charge you per click, but that's because they evaluate both the content of your ad (comparing it to the destination page) and the success rate, and then disqualify it if they deem it not good enough. They can do that, because it's purely text based.

Well I've pulled the ads for the moment, but like General MacArthur they will return... (I've still got quite a lot more).

Thanks to everyone who's bought the book by the way. Feel free to continue buying it even though I'm currently ad-less. :)

Sorry I didn't get a chance to see you at Dragonmeet (but there were a lot of people I didn't get a chance to see due to the vagaries of British public transport).

Out of interest is Game Night available from Amazon only?

Regarding advertising. I understand ENWorld is currently having a 2 for 1 offer on impressions, which sounds a jolly good deal. We do ours by time rather than impressions, which does give a little variability in number of impressions, but adverts are shown throughout said month. I think it's swings & roundabouts depending on the site's dynamic, what the advertiser wants & who they likely want to advertise to. ENWorld catches a lot of eyeballs.

In a set of forums, your forum sig. file can be very effective, as forum posts are what people are there to look at.

Of course, site advertising not only helps you get exposure, but very much helps the site keep going. Servers are expensive to run! ;)

EN World does not do banner exchanges, link exchanges, etc. Cold, hard cash only, I'm afraid - the server hosting company doesn't accept goodwill in exchange for its services, much to my regret!

It's true, they don't!
