I'm making up stats for a pair of races for a setting based on Terry Pratchet's Discworld books. I was hoping I could get some help balancing them. I'm having the most trouble figuring out how much non-combat abilities should effect the race's level adjustment. For the setting I'm using the Defence Bonus optional rules from Unearthed Arcana and house rules for damage reducing armour (manufactured armour has DR equal to it's AC bonus. Natural armour has DR equal to 1/2 +1 it's AC bonus. Critical hits ignore DR from armour. A character's defence bonus is reduced by an amount equal to twice the armour check penalty of any armour and/or shield the character has).
Gnomes/Goblins
Gnomes are just goblins that live underground. Their strength has no relation to their small size (some gnomes can kill a full sized cow with a single headbutt).
- +4 dex, +2 con, -2 wis, -2 cha
- tiny (4"+2d10", ) +2 attack bonus, +2 AC, +8 on hide checks, -8 on grapple checks
- base land speed of 20ft
- +2 to move silently checks
Trolls
Trolls are silicon-based humanoids. They are amazingly strong and tough, but not very bright.
- +6 str, -4 dex, +6 con, -2 int, -2 cha
- medium size (5'5"+2d10", 370lbs x (2d4) lbs)
- Base land speed is 20ft
- Darkvision 60ft
- Trolls have natural armour DR 4 with a natural armour check penalty of -3
- Trolls have Minor Fortification. Each time they are hit by a sneak attack or critical hit there is a 25% chance that the sneak attack or critical attack is negated and the damage is instead rolled normally.
- Trolls have a natural attack in the form of a slam that does 1d4 damage.
- Each time a troll hits something with a weapon that is medium sized or smaller it must make a Strength check (DC 20 for medium, 15 for small, 10 for tiny). If the check succeeds the weapon breaks. The attack still deals damage to the target as normal.
- Trolls get Endurance as a free feat
- Trolls have teeth made from diamond. Each tooth is worth 300 Ankh-Morpork dollars or more.
- All Trolls start out Illiterate.
- 1/4 of a Troll’s body weight is counted towards it’s encumbrance. So if a Troll weighed 425lbs it would add 106lbs to the weight of it’s gear to see if it’s encumbered.
- Troll brain: on cool days or normal nights the troll’s INT stays the same. Warm days or nights reduces the troll’s INT by 2 points. On hot days or nights the troll’s INT is reduced by 4 points. Scorching, tropical heat reduces the troll’s INT by 6 points. Being dropped into the middle of the Great Nef (desert) reduces the troll’s INT by 8 points!.
A troll’s DEX is reduced by 4 if it’s INT is reduced to 3 - 4 due to heat. At INT 2 the troll is running on pure instinct and can do nothing mut move at ½ speed. At INT 1 the troll locks up and “turns to stone”.
Heat based attacks reduce the troll’s INT by a number of points equal to ½ the damage the troll takes.
Conversely, cold, autumn, temperatures increase the troll’s INT by 2. Sub-zero temperatures increases the troll’s INT by 4. A howling blizzard increases the troll’s INT by 6. Seriously cold temperatures can raise a troll’s INT to genius levels, but will start to cause severe damage after a short period.
A troll wearing heavy armour has it’s INT reduced by 2.
- Level adjustment: +2
