Umm Sanitarium, by Metallica. Might not be atmospheric enough. What type of setting/time period is it?
Maybe try some music by Krzystof Penderecki.
looking more for instrumental music....like from horror movies.

Sountracks from Signs, Sleepy Hollow, Alien, Minority Report, Pirates of the Caribbean, Last of the Mohicans and Van Helsing get pretty heavy rotation in my game. Which, incidentally, is billed as a dark fantasy/horror fantasy type of game.

Shinjuku Thief has some good instrumental pieces that are dark and ambient.. Try The Witch Hammer and The Witch Hunter. Good albums, both.

I used to play Aphex Twin Select Ambient Works volume 2 during my Call of Cthulhu games.

It's very quiet, subtle, and just off enough to make everyone particularly unsettled. Very effective for a horror game.

Midnight Syndicate has some good, if generic, bits out there.

If you can find it, Glenn Danzig's Black Aria is excellent. Not goth-rock, but extremely moody orchestral and choral music. Normally I can't stand Danzig's music, but this album is such a 180 from his normal work that it's worth a serious listen.
