help with Suel Empire

Hello,

I would like some ideas about the Suel Empire. Below is a brief outline of the timeframe of where my campaing currently is.

My Greyhawk campaing is set long ago before the twin cataclysm's and Vecna's rise to power. Eastern Oerth is dominated by the Elves and Demi-humans with a few exceptions - such as the migrating Flan, and Iggwilv's territory in what is modern day Perrenland.

This is how the Suel empire is during this time;

3247 SD The years of Conquest and Prosperity begin. No major foe opposes the might of the empire of the Suloise, although they do not push Eastward, because of some fear of the Elven hosts. Magic is rigorously pursued. Old Grey Elven texts are discovered and studied. The might and haughtiness of the Elves is copied in manner in the courts. But their wisdom is not... Slavery becomes common and widespread in the Suloise lands, this continues for many centuries. The Flanae in the southeast (just west of the Hellfurnaces), the Oerid to the east, the Kersi (the long distant descendants of those who first sailed from AnaKeri) to the south, and the Bakluni to the north, and several unnamed small tribes to the west all fall under the grip of the Suloise fist. The entire of the western half of Oerik, is controlled by the Suel. But the drow and darker forces, and a fear of other elves, halt the eastern expansion.

In Eastern Oerth young Vecna has been a good behaviour hostage and has just returned home for a visit, in which his father died and he now controls the Ur-Flan tribe. He is currently studying the Book of Tilorop and has built his black tower in the Nyr Dyv. He has been a good leader and has bought about the defeat of a major giant threat to his tribe (G1-4 Against the Giants). However Elves and Ur-Flan are on the brink of war since it was secretely told to them about Vecna's theft of the book and the increasing warlike nature of the Flan and thier alliances with humanoid tribes. This is year 440 Flan Time.

The group is travelling to the Suloise Empire and I need ideas of how thier cities are, manner of dress, architecture, kinds of things thed find in a magic rich society dominated by slaving cruel nobles for the most part. There are 2 goodly aligned Suloise great houses, and one neutral one from memory.

Currently I am thinking of Warhammer 40k/Chronicles of Riddick type gothic barroque scenery and dress. I'd like some memorable NPC ideas, a few locations, some modules I can use or adapt etc.

Thanks a lot for any help! [bribe] Also anyone who helps can stay at my place if ever you are in New Zealand.[/bribe]

I don`t think I`m goint to get to NZ anytime soon, but here goes:

Your number one online resources for things Greyhawk would be: Canonfire and the Greytalk archives.
http://www.canonfire.com/htmlnew/modules.php?name=Search
http://www.greycitadel.com/greycita...ount=10&SearchMax=200&Query=suel architecture

from the latter:
> Jim Ward's Deserted Cities of Mars article (in SR#3) makes for decent Ancient
> Suel architecture.

I vaguely recall reading Gygax doing just that somewhere...
SR#3 refers to the Strategic Review magazine #3 which is available in the Dragon Magazine Archive CDROMs

For info on the Suel check out the Scarlet Brotherhood supplement. I`d even suggest yuo buy it for it has much info that can be used for an ancient suel empire and gives great insight into suel culture, customs, bred thrall races (the ancient ones: derro, jermlaine) etc...

It has a small section on architecture.
The original Suel empire had two distinct architectural styles. [...]
One type features high angular buildings with climbing spires and sharp lines on all sides. The other style features rounded buildings usually capped with domes or onion shaped towers. [there is some later stuff]

Notes on the Suel from the Gord novels can be found on Chris Sirens gord`s Greyhawk site:
http://home.comcast.net/~chris.s/bakluni.html#dust

For ancient history check out the Greychrondex:
http://www.canonfire.com/htmlnew/ghchrondex.php

And Maldin`s Greyhawk is a must if you want background info on the hows and whys of the Suel-Bakluni great war and the major artifacts involved:

Else search the greytalk archive, canonfire or the web for suel empire or similar terms: (suel empire 200 results! ..try also suloise )

http://www.greycitadel.com/greycita...rt=1&Count=10&SearchMax=200&Query=suel empire

from the first result:
am interested in possibly setting an adventure at the height of the Suel
empire. There is an interesting timeline in one of the Oerth journals.
I am considering using the Byzantine empire as a model for the Suel
empire, due to some similarities: an emperor, monks, feuding houses, and
conflict with Arab-like Bakluni. The only "official" glimpse of the
"Forgotten City" is in Gygax's book "Sea of Death".
Paul STtormberg answers said:
I used the Basic module B4 The Lost City as the Forgotten City. It works out perfectly.

Check the rest of the results to see if he posted anything about his take on the empire. Plus there should be much more stuff on the list about suel religion, customs, etc...

Incidently Maldin answered that message with a short recount of his brilliant campaign which culminates in those ancient times:

There is a very good (IMO) article in Dragon 230 by Roger. It can be used on several different levels...
1. Gives descriptions and powers for the Orbs of Dragonkind.
2. Provides the setup for a FtA adventure in Almor.
3. Provides background on the Suel Empire pre-Twin Cataclysm.

The Orbs wher crafted appr -2350CY which is some years before your campaign dates. Perhaps you can glean some interesting info from the article, which traces the path of some orbs through history..

When I think of the Suel Imperium, the first thing that comes to mind is extraordinary magic. To run a campaign set in that era, you have to decide how you represent that, and how much to emphasise it. Is magic really common, really powerful, or both?

If it's really common, you will need to think through things like how that affects commerce, building, warfare, law enforcement and so forth. If it's really powerful (which is how I'd lean, given what we know about Slerotin, and the Invoked Devestation), you need to figure out how it works. Do you want to use the Epic Spell rules from the ELH? Do you want to create a cooperative magic system that allows massive invocations? Maybe the most powerful magic is based on direct intervention of deities or other powerful extraplanar beings. You might want to check out the Dungeon magazine adventure Maure Castle for a few hints from people who have thought about this before - it's based on the apprentices of Slerotin, the last mage of power, and talks about a concept called Power Magic, which is undefined, but hugely powerful.

I think what I'd do to represent Power Magic, based on the hints we've got, is to jack up the scale of the magic to a ridiculous degree. Maybe it can't do anything that normal spells can't do, but it can do them big. If a spell can create a hole in a wall (passwall), Power Magic can blast a tunnel through a mountain range (Slerotin's passage). If a spell can summon a demon (planar binding), Power Magic can summon a horde of demons (Invoked Devestation). If a spell can shield an area from damage (wall of force), Power Magic can shield a city from the Rain of Colorless Fire.

Great stuff. This thread should technically be in General Discussion, but I'll leave it here until I'm back at the end of the weekend so that folks can ruminate a little more. Remind me then, Sandain, and we'll move it to General Discussion where more folks will see it.

This thread is a bit old, but I stumbled upon it by accident! ;-)

Wow... That post of mine to Greytalk is over 7 years old! ;-) Anyways, I'd like to add two things if the original participants of the this thread are still around...

Firstly: My "Maldin's Greyhawk" website has been completely revamped and moved to http://melkot.com

And secondly, I've posted a fairly detailed description of the timetravel adventure I did to the week of the Rain of Colorless Fire/Invoked Devastation (which includes a description of the actual disaster), along with a newly added description of the artifact that caused the Rain at http://melkot.com/mysteries/cataclysms.html

The RoCF/ID is a popular topic. Hope people are still interested!
