Cultural Paragons

the Jester

Legend
I've been thinking for some time about one-level 'flavor' classes to give a little cultural flavor to characters. After seeing the racial paragons in UA I thought it might be neat to make these 'flavor' classes into 'cultural paragon' classes. This is my first draft... what do you think? Do these stack up against a standard base class well? Too well? Their benefits are pretty good, but they're very specific.

Also, I'm concerned- are there any prestige classes that these would make entry into too easy? They add a class skill to the character, so I'd like to get what feedback I can from folks on that issue as well.

Anyway, here are my first two cultural prestige classes (draft 1):

CULTURAL PARAGON CLASSES: These are similar to racial paragon classes, but only have one level. A character can only have one cultural paragon class. A character may have both racial and cultural paragon levels.

Forinthian Paragon
Forinthians, as a rule, are orderly and godly-minded. The Forinthian paragon is one whose cultural upbringing has instilled these views in him.

Hit Dice: d8

Class Skills: Concentration (con), Craft (int), Heal (wis), Intimidate (cha), Knowledge (religion) (int), Profession (wis), Ride (dex), Sense Motive (wis). Skill points per level: 2 + int bonus.

Base Attack: +0
Saves: Fort +2, Ref +0, Will +2
Forinthian Culture (Ex): Knowledge (religion) is always a class skill and cleric is considered an additional favored class for the paragon. He may continue taking paladin levels even if he takes levels in other classes after taking his first paladin level.

Peshan Paragon

Peshans are known to be masters of the mercantile arts. They have a reputation for being smooth-talking swindlers or wealthy merchants. Pesh is also notoriously loose-moraled.

Hit Dice: d6.
Class Skills: Appraise (int), Bluff (cha), Craft (int), Diplomacy (cha), Escape Artist (dex), Forgery (int), Gather Information (cha), Knowledge (local) (int), Open Lock (dex), Profession (wis), Search (int), Sleight of Hand (dex), Speak Language. Skill points: x + int bonus (x4 at first level).
Base Attack: +0
Saves: Fort +0, Ref +2, Will +0
Peshan Culture: Diplomacy is always considered to be a class skill for a Peshan paragon. Rogue is an additional favored class for the paragon. Whenever the paragon sells an item, she can obtain an extra 10% of its value.

Whaddaya think?

How many skill points do the pesh get?

I think its a neat idea. Have you ever thought about 1-level (or 3-level) alignment paragons? Of course what would picking up one level of Chaos imply (I think I can guess...). While your Chaos Warrior prestige class is similar to this idea, it would be neat for each alignment to have something like that.

They seem balanced, but since they don't really have any special abilities why not give forinthian +1 caster level and peshan +1 level equivelant to uncanny dodge (so it stacks for being hard to sneak attack and stacks for letting you sneak attack someone who has U. Dodge (IIRC you need to be 4 levels higher than them)). I have no idea how to word that as an ability either :P

Giving peshan the ability to find traps would also be neat (as then you wouldn't have to be a rogue, and therefore have sneak attack, in order to find traps - although you would have to be a rogue or be a peshan :)).

Technik

I really love this idea. It needs a little work, mostly fleshing out the cultures a bit more so it's much easier to see the relation between the skills and special features and the nature of the culture, but all in all, a solid idea. I'd even go so far as to say this should replace subraces.

Compared to 1st-level PC classes, they seem alright, even a little less powerful. I'd give these classes at least 4 + Intelligence modifier skills to allow for a variety of functions within the culture. I'd also consider cultural feats as an option.

Have you thought about designing the cultural classes thematically as well as specifically? Such as horse culture, mountain culture, religious culture, etc.?

Examle:

HORSE CULTURE
HD: d8
BAB: +0 (case could be made for +1)
Saves: Fortitude +0 (case could be made for +1 or +2), Reflex +2, Will +0
Class Skills: Handle Animal, Knowledge (nature), Listen, Ride, Spot, Survival
Skill Points: 4 + Intelligence modifier (x4 at 1st level)
Bonus feat: Choose from Animal Affinity, Mounted Combat, Skill Focus (Handle Animal), and Skill Focus (Ride).
Class ability: Equine Affinity. Like wild empathy, but can only be used with equines.
