Invoking Hexblades

Hey,

I think (and others on the board, notably Dungeonmaster Cal, have indicated they feel the same) that hexblades (CW) and warlocks (CA) are thematically pretty similar. As such, I've taken steps to give hexblades invocations, as a warlock. Since a hexblade is a "half-caster" when compared to a sorcerer, I've made the invoking hexblade a "half-invoker".

I won't print the entirety of the hexblade here, but it's a simple change anyway. Remove the Spells per Day listings from the hexblade table, and drop the Spells Known table as well. Add the following to the hexblade table:

Code:
Level Special Invocations Known
1 -
2 -
3 -
4 -
5 Invocation (least) 1
6 1
7 1
8 2
9 2
10 Invocation (lesser) 2
11 3
12 3
13 3
14 4
15 Invocation (greater) 4
16 4
17 5
18 5
19 5
20 6

And that's that. I've been turning spells of the appropriate levels into invocations as it is - I'll add some of the more curse-like spells to the list to better accomodate the hexblade. Comments?

FWIW, IMC the elves are an inherently magical people, with warlocks as their main spellcasters and hexblades as their warriors. Both classes are favored.

Thanks,
-Matt

I call shenanigans! I proposed this idea the other day in this thread:
http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=109808

Of course, I don't own either of the books yet, but dang it, I came up with the idea! Shenanigans, I say!

Actually, your workup is really good. I was thinking of limiting them to lesser invocations and giving them Eldritch Blast with a 4 or 5d6 cap, though. Just wish I had 'em so I could go tinkering crazy!

Duly noted. Looks like I'm not as original as I thought.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Eldritch Blast. I like that it's mutable, but that every warlock has the same attack kinda irks me. I'm not interested in revamping the class, however, so it stays.

Actually, the fact you and I had similar ideas can be seen as another example of the ENWorld Groupthink; where good ideas and the obsession to tinker flow like water!

Thanks for posting this.

I've been thinking about using hexblades and warlocks to represent the fiendish legacy of the Narfell Empire in the Unapproachable East in FR and also as favoured classes for the tieflings of Dawnforge. So, my thanks is for saving me some work in making the two classes similar! ;)

Killer. That's one of the best "re-vamping the Realms" ideas I've heard in awhile. Man, i wish there were 10 of me so I could run with every good idea I hear about the Realms.

Oh, and some player's that give a toilet flush about the place.

More on topis, has anyone else had problems shoe-horning arcane spells into invocations? I've been converting them directly over, but it seems so simple, I'm worried I'm missing something, and I'll end up with uber-elves. God, I hate elves, but the kids love 'em.

Thanks,
-Matt

Neat idea, but Warlock invocations are only usable by themselves, right? You might want to limit which spells Hexblades have available to them as invocations.

hound of doom, what about the hound of dooom, what level of invocation would that be? its such a cool spell, should be a class ability though, i mean with its durration of what? hours. The durration combined with its coolness factor, what self respecting warlock isnt going to cast it?

Ya, very good

Its a good version, but assuming the hexblade gets all of of his/her abilities accept casting it is overpowered. It is almost like giving level 6 spells but better because at will spells like invocations are good for fighters. I mean, spells are useful for a fighter, but I can always fly is more useful.
