Here's the situation in our Forgotton Realms campaign:
I have taken it upon myself to ressurect Bane. The exact details of how are beyond me at the moment but finding out what must be done in order to raise a dead god is 54.6% of the fun.
The problem comes from the gods and in a lesser way, but nevertheless important way, powerful mortal diviners. There are very few gods I can think of who stand neutral towards, let alone support, the notion of Bane's return. I don't see how I can accomplish anything without some god knowing about it and sending his servants to put a halt to my "evil" schemes.
This is where you guys come in. I have come to these boards for many years and in this time have seen hundreds of threads from people who have had problems of similar magnitude. And (almost) every time the FR buffs of this board have come with effective and, more importantly, awesome solutions.
I was hoping you guys could help me aswel.
First, a breakdown of my party and resources (Though the following is less important if you have a few general tips).
-My character (Cleric 8/Divine Herald 6, AL LE) was a cleric of Cyric who became disillusioned with the chaotic and seemingly random acts of his deity and followers. I turned my back on Cyric and his ways and gave up my spellcasting ability. In hindsight I realize this wasn't the brightest thing I could do because internally I may have been able to do alot more damage than externally, but it seemed very fitting at the time for my character. I have talked to my DM and convinced him that a cleric's power lies more in his training than in the power a deity can give him so I can still cast spells from scrolls and wands as if I had my spell-list. I can also still use my Craft Wondrous and Magic Arms feats as long as someone else casts the spells for the creation of it.
-Our WMD (Wizard of Mass Destruction, AL LE) Lord Goodwhyne (you can laugh, I sure did) is a 14th level wizard/1st level Archmage. He specializes in damage and lots of it. He also has a territory in Cormyr (Maybe our DM can come in and tell you the exact details) that he rules. The territory (plus tower) was loaned to him as he doesn't have any royal blood. It can be taken away from him at any time if he proves he is not fit to rule it. This one's only 8th level spells in his spellbook are Mind Blank and Discern Location. Odd for his character, I know, but they might prove to be handy. Also has Craft Wondrous and Craft Wand. He is very much interested in the power a god would give him if it was raised.
-The Necromancer (Necromancer 12/Undead Lord or something 2, from Relics and Rituals, AL LE) has vast power over life and death. Well, over death, he is good at killing single Big things. He is apparently part of some big undead organization but he hasn't told us what it is. I will ask the name of it next time I see him. More importantly, he is a devout Cyricist. He has not made a move against me because of my resources (explained below) and I think because he is hoping I can come up with some kind of reason as to why he would follow us. In time I will give him a reason.
-The Half-Orc (Barbarian 15, AL CE). What can I say? Lots of HP's, great damage output. The perfect blunt instrument
. He is reasonably intelligent (12) and is played as such. He is going a different route, however, than the big dumb big sword wielder, though I don't know what that is.
-The Bard (Bard 10, Vampire, AL LE). She is my cohort. Her spells, skills and general way of doing things are geared towards subversion and submission. Domination, illusions, Modify Memory etc. She has connections with the Shadow Thiefs, though those have deteriorated somewhat because they have not been maintained. And the Night Masks hunt her because she had her master killed. She is excellent as a scout and wonderful with a bow.
Followers, Allies and resources:
-If we pool our spendable money together we have about 260k in gp. Though about a 160k of that is being split between the 4 primary members.
-We have a dungeon somewhere in Cormyr. It's the dungeon from a module from either Dungeon or Dragon. It was the issue which had a white half-dragon with sword and shield on the front cover. Anyways, the dungeon is quite large (and getting bigger), has a diamond mine (producing 5000 worth of diamonds a month) and a tunnel leading into the Underdark.
-In our treasury we have a ring of Mind Blank (not shield), however it only works for Loviatarists. We also have a +1 Unholy Flaming Trident of Fish Command with 5 charges left. That has to be good for something
.
-I have the Leadership feat and have started to attract followers. My Leadership score is 25. The necromancer will take undead leadership next level but I don't know what he is planning to do with his followers.
Now it gets interesting: As far as I know, my character is the only one who has allies but luckily I have quite a lot.
My mentor (Cleric 8/Ur Priest 9) is a patriarchal Ogre and former cleric of Bane. I can't call upon him to help us unless I can convince him that it will help in our goal. He spends most of his time in meditation and study does not want to spend his time "adventuring." However, he has quite a lot of information and access to clerical divinitions. For his protection he has hired a group of Ogres plus Minotaur that have been with him for about 5-6 years. They are loyal as long as they get paid.
I have an old "friend." A telepath Medusa, who is the only one, along with my cohort who knows the full extent of my plan. She has access to the Mind Probe power (learn answer to one question per level) which I think can come in quite handy.
Then there are my two sisters and their group but I have had to break off contact with them because they have a powerful cleric of Cyric in their midst. I can occasionally have someone cast sending and maybe if the situation desperatly needs it I can call upon them. However, like the Ogre, they are quite good at information gathering and unlike me are still "inside" the Church of Cyric.
So my problem is how I can get around the gods? Or maybe better, how can I distract them and their servants long enough so I can accomplish my task? I have the feeling that no matter what I do or what precautions I take the gods know it all. Cyric knows what I'm doing, he knows that my sisters aren't really Cyricists etc. It's quite frustrating.
How much do you guys let your gods know in FR? Are they really omniscient or are there ways to get around them?
Well, that should be enough for now
