What's this about a plagiarized map in Conan: City of Shadizar?

Recently saw this in today's news and at the Mongoose forums.

Looks like a pretty big scandal.

Lots of upset fans, naturally, but It looks like Mongoose are acting as quickly as possible on this one.

On wonder how harshly this will be viewed at WotC?

Given that Mongoose seems to have been duped into the bargain... I would expect that the 'artist' will have a very hard time ever getting work again - things like this spread in the community, eh?

The Auld Grump... and from a widely accessed website yet... the term that comes to mind is 'idiot'.

I actually think a simple mistake like you suggest is probably /much/ more likely than actual malfeasance.

Given Mongoose's long history of rotten, slip-shod editing, I would urge everyone to wait before throwing the artist or anyone else under the bus just yet. For example, I understand that the very sell copy on the back of a recent Conan boxed set is riddled with typos -- if your quality control is /that/ bad, I could easily imagine a last minute mistake like sustituting a placeholder map for the final one.

All I can say is that Mongoose has always been willing to make amends. They've been more than fair in the past & I expect no less now. I bought the box set & overall it is great as all of their Conan products have been. A new map would be great but knowing that a company stands behind their products means more to me! Just my two coppers. Maester Luwin

Well, they are your coppers, after all. But wouldn't you prefer Mongoose to get it right the first time, rather than continually have to make amends?

All I can say is that Matt is very, very lucky to have such forgiving customers.

They are going to get a new map made and most likey ask people to send in the old one (for proof that you bought the box set) and then they will sell you a new one.

Ya, its really good to see that when a company gets ripped off by talent they hire, that the consumers are willing to understand the reality of the sitation and not hold it over their head. Frankly, mongoose has made some mistakes but not near as bad as so many people seem to think.

and if you want to see some less forgiving customers, read the thread on their own site.

Hard to say, but if Mongoose has anything close to a standard contract (and it is very likely they do) they should be covered. The "artist" on the other hand has probably ended his career in the industry.

FWIW the map in Shadizar was altered from the original in Spellbound. Grass was replaced with sand to give more of a desert feel and a few other things were altered.

If it was a palceholder, it was one that the "author" spent deliberate time & effort to visually change.
