Look what I got my GM for GM's Day!!!

Tom, if you happen to read this in the next three hours, don't read any further.

Safety space.

So, the lovely artist Acquana has been doing an illustration each day on her thread in the art forum, here. I decided I'd like to get an illustration from her as a gift for my game master, Tom, who posts here as Scipio. In the last campaign I ran, Tom's character - Rantle, a human fighter/rogue - ended up becoming the main protagonist. He saved the world, toppled an evil empire, and became the new lord, ruling with peace and prosperity. But first, he had to get a woman to make him stay on the straight path.

That woman was Shalosha Sunchild, daughter of Shaaladel, The Shining Emperor of the Shahalesti Elves. Shalosha tried to kill Rantle and the party on behalf of her father the emperor, but the party took her as a captive, and Rantle was taken with how beautiful she was. At the same time, though, Rantle's sister Katrina had been taken captive by Shaaladel, and the group arranged an exchange. On the way to the exchange, though, Elvish warriors attacked, and Shalosha tried to escape.

Now, in a normal one of my games they would have beaten her down, possibly killed her. But Tom was in a heroic sort of mood, so while the rest of the group fought off the rescue attempt, Rantle battled Shalosha, trying not to harm her, trying instead to convince her what a cruel bastard her father was. As the battle was reaching its climax and the Elves were taking the upper hand, Rantle stumbles and drops his guard. Shalosha impales him in the stomach with a critical hit.

Tom says, "I've still got a few hit points. For my action, can I lean forward and kiss her before I pass out?"

I say, "You've got a sword in your stomach."

"All the better. If I have to pull myself along the sword, I want to kiss her before she escapes."

Rantle succeeds a grapple and leans in for a kiss. The shocked Shalosha presses her sword even deeper into him, but Rantle keeps his composure for a few seconds before passing out. Shalosha lets him fall to the ground, and though she has the chance to finish him off, she hesitates and flees with her allies. Rantle's near-death kiss apparently had a profound effect on her, because she soon left her father and rejoined the group, hoping to protect them from her father's wrath.

So began the first real love plot I've ever had in one of my games - a love that would save the party, and the world, more than once. Quite dramatic, wouldn't you say?

Well, Acquana took a bit of liberty by impaling Rantle through the heart, but the metaphor works even better.

There's something about the line "You've got a sword in your stomach!" there that I find hysterical.

That's just brilliant, both story and art.
