that's a good thing though no?

Besides, it's not all of Malahvoc that has this problem, usually just Monte's books.

Look at Anger of Angels, Cry Havoc or Bonds of Magic. I'm pretty sure there's almost 100% OGC. (I could be wrong asi t's been a while...)

Hehe, yes, the designations were sometimes a bit confusing. 'The mechanics are OGC except names and everything that's product identity except when it's already part of the SRD' or something along this vein :D;).

From the contents preview this book looks interesting, always some fun idea from Malhavoc.

But can anyone tell me just what is a Gutter Mage? From the name, I very much want to play one. I've seen the term on occasion before, but not in enough context to grasp it. Is it just a creative name for a hedge wizard?

The Gutter Mage is an arcane rogue.
d4 HD
only 4 skill points per level
the spell progression of a bard
and some special abilities (also has sneak attack)

Any other questions?

Have you already purchased the PDF, Cergorach? Pretty quick.

Couple more questions, since you offered:

1. Spotaneous caster, or does the gutter mage prepare spells?

2. What sort of other special abilities, in addition to sneak attack?

3. Sounds a little underpowered so far, what is your take?

Thanks!

1. Int based preparing mage.

2. Scribe scrolls (1), Wand mastery (2), Wardsight (4), Nondescript (5), Improvise spell (8), Staff mastery (10), Steal spell (10), Reflect spell (14), Capture spell (16), Spell resistance (19), Alterspell (20). Sneak attack +1d6 at 3rd +1d6 every 3 levels.

3. Depends on what kind of game you play, this class might not be at it's best in a dungeon crawl that's one combat after another, i think it's best in a city based campaign. Looks like fun, especially if you start to read the special abilities...

I was a playtester for Roguish Luck but haven't recieved my complimentary copy... so I don't know if anything changed. Based on comments, the Gutter Mage doesn't look like it changed much, if at all.

And yes, the assessment of the Gutter Mage is correct. The Gutter Mage is not a combat class (the D4 hit dice, poor BAB progression and a sneak attack progression inferior to a rogue) and therefore, in a dungeon crawly or other combat intensive setting, he is not going to be 'top shelf'.

But in a city campaign or thieves guild campaign or a intrigue style of campaign, he is gets to strut his stuff and is surprising adaptive and versatile given what most people would consider his limitations (D4 HD, poor BAB).
