Got a job!

That's Latin for "cool"
For those of you who commit all my posts to memory and write them down in sacred texts so that future generations can benefit from my experiences, you will be pleased to know that I landed a job. It wasn't the one where I had to write the dice roller (those guys were jerks) but I'm happy with the company I ended up with.

This has been my only period of unemployment with a family. I do not reccomend it. While it was fun to play with my daughter more often, the constant sense of failure was overwhelming.

So I'm back on track. The company is in Reston, VA, USA. If any of you guys are java developers looking for work, shoot me an email. They're still hiring. The actual work is a little weird. Its product support for the first few months. But the culture is good. Considering my last gig was at Fannie Mae (which has aquired some infamy recently) that is a welcome change.

I didn't think Java developers anywhere had problems finding work? Maybe I'm wrong. Of course, any development position is always in danger of getting outsourced. Has that been your experience?

My situation was a little unique. I supported a team of 50-60 system administrators. So for the past five years I've been working solo. So I have no recent technical references and all my prior technical references are basically obsolete. Further muddeling things is that before Fannie Mae I worked for two dot coms that no longer exist. So even confirming employment is hard for me.

Then there was the weird stuff. As a fluff question I like to end interviews by asking my perspective employer what book they would make their team read if they could. It tells me a lot about the leadership style of the person I'm dealing with. Anyway, I was at a Fortune 500 company that will remain nameless, I asked that question and the guy said "Playboy". Eerp! I haven't known the guy for 20 minutes and already I'm in the middle of a potential lawsuit! That was just freaky.
