So, a new game is starting. People want to use the point buy system to create characters for this long running campaign. You have no idea what other people will play and haven't decided yourself. What is the smallest amount of point buy you'd be willing to use to create characters with?

I'd play with 12 if I knew the DM was planning on a really low-power "gritty" game and the NPCs would match us.

I would not play with 40 if I thought the DM would use that as an excuse to harass and annoy the party.

So I'm voting 25.

i think 22 could work pretty welll, in a 'traditional' party, as long as encounters were tailored towards it. Fighters with 'huge' strength scores, wizards with int, rogues with dex etc.

it'd make magic items a lot more potent, and, well, magical. Hmm..

I would love to answer the poll, but there's no option for "I would rather roll the dice." If I want to play a point-buy system I will play GURPS, which I would prefer anyway, but that is a whole different poll. To me, as a bit of a traditionalist, the whole point of creating characters in D&D is to roll the dice and take your chances.

I agree

A take my chances on dice should have been included.

I have had several successful characters that have survived dispite what others consider bad numbers . I have even had them when the numbers were not assignable ie you rolled a number for strength etc

Everyone thought my fighter with the 16 wisdom should have been a cleric but not me. I played him as a savy vet not a muscle bound idiot and had a blast

Once again the spectre of everyone must be equal has raised its ugly head and life is not always balanced or fair. It is better to play an over acheiver with weaker stats than to have the same 6 numbers as everyone else just arranged differently

It depends on what I'm playing. If I'm playing a wizard or barbarian, 25 would be fine. If I'm playing a paladin or monk, I'd want at least 28. I guess 25 is the absolute minimum I'd accept, but given that that doesn't work for all cases, I'd far prefer 28.
