How long to Sunder the Evil Sword?

diaglo

Adventurer
so as part of the kill the evil antipaladin and take his things phat lewt we got an Unholy Sword. a Med Greatsword

4 of 5 party members are good aligned. the 5th is too small to wield it.

so mechanically how long does it take to sunder the sword?

just curious, as we don't have a lot of time to hang out where we are.

As long as someone in the party has power attack.

If you've got any adamantine weapons and it's hardness is under 20, then a round, possibly 2.

But it really depends on how tough the weapon in question is. Any idea about the enchantments/materials?

IIRC, you'll also need a weapon with a bigger + than the one you're trying to kill. (Oooer!)

Only in 3.0. This is not true in 3.5. Enhancements (not special abilities like unholy) add +2 to hardness and +10 hit points, but that's it.

Don't forget to use Maximum power attack as well as it will be very difficult to miss.

But, even just "destroying" like this means that somone finding the pieces can reforge it at half-price.

It depends what version of D&D you are playing.
3.0 you need to have a weapon with an equal or higher enhancement bonus than the one you are trying to break. A non special material medium sized greatsword has hardness of 10+1/point of enhancement and hit points of 10+1/point of enhancement.
In 3.5 you do not need a higher enhancement bonus to sunder a weapon. But the hardness of the greatsword is 10+2/enhancement bonus and has hit points of 10+10/enhancement bonus.

So in 3.0 it is either easy or impossible and in 3.5 it is harder to do, but unless you are too weak to deal more than the hardness, never impossible.

I'm pretty sure the Bigger Plus rule was in 3.0. But I may be wrong.

Used a +2 Greatsword to sunder it. We had several minutes at the time.

What we really need to do is check on the Demon armor and see if that is evilly aligned.

(or if it could be worn by one of us  )

If it really is Demon armor, I believe there are rules in the BoED to convert it into some sort of holy armor. All is not lost even for the heroically Good party. :)

Similarly there might be rules on turning the unholy sword to holy.

My question is...

...Why destroy it? An unholy sword is at least a +3 (at minimum, it's +1 Unholy), which can be sold for 9,000 gp. Just because someone's good doesn't mean that they necessarily have to destroy everything capable of killing good- otherwise, they'd never sell a single weapon (as any weapon can be used to kill a good character). So why on earth is the party intent on destroying it? Why not just sell it?

Errrr????

Think that through a bit more.

Who is an unholy weapon best at killing?
