Quintin's Quality Contingency
Evocation
Level: Sor/Wiz 9
Components: V, S
Casting Time: At least 10 minutes; see text
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: See text
You can dedicate a number of your spells so that they come into effect under some conditions you dictate when casting quality contingency. You can specify a number of conditions equal to your caster level divided by 3, rounded down.
The quality contingency spell and the companion spells are cast at the same time. The 10-minute casting time is the minimum total for all castings; if any of the companion spells have a casting time longer than 10 minutes, use that instead.
Once the companion spells are cast, the spell slots or spells per day which they occupied or used are dedicated to quality contingency. Another spell cannot be prepared in the slots until the quality contingency is triggered, at which point the slots or spells per day are considered used until you rest and regain spells.
The quality contingency remains until triggered or dispelled.
The conditions needed to bring the spell into effect must be clear, although they can be general. In all cases, the contingency immediately brings into effect the companion spell, the latter being “cast” instantaneously when the prescribed circumstances occur. If complicated or convoluted conditions are prescribed, the whole spell combination (contingency and the companion magic) may fail when called on. The companion spell occurs based solely on the stated conditions, regardless of whether you want it to.
You can use only one contingency spell at a time; if a second is cast, the first one (if still active) is dispelled.
Example: If you are 18th level and have 3 8th level spells per day and 2 9th level spells, you could cast quality contingency, followed by power word stun, and time stop. As long as the conditions of the contingency are not met, you would only be able to memorize 2 8th level spells per day and 0 9th level spells.
