It seems that there are a lot of folks here who actively, or at least vocally, dislike the current edition of D&D. I find that odd considering this board is dedicated to the current edition of the game and it's "spin offs". Sort of like going to a dog-lovers forum and constantly spouting how much cats are better pets.

I'm curious enough to make a poll to let folks stand up for their preference. This poll is not meant to start another edition war, but I realize it can (probably will) happen. So let's try to keep posts in this thread to discussion of the poll rather than arguments about the subject of the poll, for as long as possible.

First one to post an insult towards any edition of D&D, loses.

This is a public poll to show who voted for what.

I like the current edition because it works better with my admittedly math-challenged brain. I always found THAC0 confusing in AD&D. It seemed to me to work backward. I didn't like dealing with negative numbers. It also seemed to take forever to level up (although that may merely have been the campaign I was involved in). Despite all the kits there wasn't as much variety within classes. 3.X doesn't solve every problem, but then no system does. It's just easier for me to wrap my meagre brain cells around using one die for most everything and adding bonuses to it to determine success.

I like, and have played, all three editions. However, I enjoy it in its current form the most.

I strongly prefer 1e AD&D. I can tolerate Original D&D, Basic D&D, or 2e AD&D. I won't play 3e or 3.5e, I have never purchased a 3e or 3.5e product, and I will never do so.

I enjoyed the 1st and 2nd editions actually more than the current incarnation, but the 3.5 version is what is played now. So I deal with it and play 3.5.

As a side note, there was not much online activity in 198x to make that comparison on forums. Gaming groups in the eighties played 1st edition, and talked about the old paperback rules.

I think the current edition is an enormous improvement over previous editions. That said, it's been out long enough to begin showing its flaws, some of which are substantial, IMO. Recognizing those flaws and publicly criticizing them should not be equated with dislike or hatred of the system.

3.5 is great because it's easier to teach and easier to learn.

The downfall is that it's so easy to learn that player argue rules with you much more than they did in earlier editions.

I still prefer 3.5 though.

I played basic and expert then advanced D&D (skiped the 2nd edition) and now like the 3.5 edition although it really does not seem to have needed the 3.5 rules 3.0 was fine

I voted I prefer another system over D&D simply because I never liked the idea of escalating hit points. When a 150 foot dragon steps on you, you die. When you fall 100 feet, you die or are horribly maimed. The reason I like D&D supplements is the same reason I like GURPS supplements- they are great sources of ideas and settings to convert.
