Adding Wealth Bonuses: An Alterative

Wealth Bonus Addition:

The D20 Modern Wealth bonus is an inspired idea. But it does have one flaw. When the characters need to buy a group of things, or build something. There is no obvious way to add wealth scored together. The usual suggestion is to convert each wealth bonus into it's equivalent dollar cost (see Table 7-1), add up the costs, then convert the value back to a wealth Bonus.

This works, but I don't like the switch from abstract wealth bonus to concrete dollars and back every time. Now for me, a math geek, the wealth bonus to dollar table is a simple +8/x10 log scale table, and adding these values is fairly simple. But most people are not math geeks, so I came up with a simplified system.

I'm not claiming this system is any easier than the original convert, add, convert system. But it does use a smaller table, and simpler math. Particularly if you are adding wealth bonuses over 20 on a regular bases (like building starships).

To use this system, take the item with the highest wealth DC, this is the base item. For every other wealth bonus in your list, subtract the wealth DC from the base item DC and compare it to Table 1. This gives you a relative value for this item. Add up the values you get for each item and look up the total value on Table 2. This gives you a wealth bonus to add to the base item wealth DC.
Code:
Table 1:                ||  Table 2:
Wealth Bonus Value || Value Total Wealth Bonus
    -0          10      ||     0          +0
    -1           8      ||     1-2        +1
    -2           6      ||     3-6        +2
    -3           5      ||     7-14       +3
    -4           3      ||    15-21       +4
    -5           2      ||    22-34       +5
    -6           2      ||    35-49       +6
    -7           1      ||    50-64       +7
    -8           1      ||    65-100      +8
    -9 or more   0      ||    100-299     +9

That last paragraph you use to explain the table is a little hard to follow.

Perhaps you could rewrite it with a step by step list?

I think there might also be a couple terminology typos.

Opps. My bad. It helps to have the right numbers in the tables to begin with, and then to format and label them properly In the code section there are two tables, each with two columns. Table 1 is the first two columns, table 2 is the second two columns. I'm fixing the table as soon as I post this message.

How about an example. From D20 future, on Page 191 there is an example of building a robot. I have a Medium Armature frame (DC 20), multiple legs (DC 10), Two claws (DC14 each), duralloy plating (DC 20), Dexterity Upgrage (DC 15), Internal Storage unit (DC 8).

The frame has the highest DC, so it becomes the base item. Using TableThe remaining items are subtracted from the base item and we the the value for each.: Legs (-10, value 0), two claws (-6, value 2 each), Plating (-0, value 10), Dex upgrade (-5, value 2), internal storage (-12, value 0). Total value is 16, which from table 2, is wealth +4, or DC 24.

Adding the values by conversion I get frame ($2000), legs ($120), two claws ($350 each), Plating ($2000), Dex Upgrade ($500), Internal Storage ($70). Totals $5390, or DC 24.
