Hey, Just checking to see what people think of the new Dragonlance stuff. Dragonlance was my first exposure to D&D (also the best) and have always liked the novels. Besides liking the gaming world & novels I really like the what Sov Press has done in the way of production values and such. Some the best (IMO) art in gaming is in the DL book. what do you think?

I think the new DL books are well done. That said, I don't want to play a DL game. I'll use some of the races, monsters, and the Mystic class, but the world hasn't grabbed me and screamed "Play me!!!" like it did when I was a teenager. It doesn't have a really good hook that hasn't been done in one form or another elsewhere. Like I said though, it is MUCH better than the older editions. The writing, artwork, and overall presentation is a lot better. I'm happy with my DL purchases, just not as much with the setting's core. Good homebrew mining material though.

DL clearly shows that a novel driven world and a gaming world are quite contrary. The stories and developments in the books are so BIG that a typical roleplaying character has no place to shine among them.

When I've read through the campain setting and the Age of Mortals books, I was tempted to dust off the original adventures and update them. But, hey, that would be quite a lot of work and a huge investment of time for an old greaser's trip of nostalgia.

I like the setting, but I've already played a lot of it in 2E and the beginning of 3E. I've got too many cool things to try to go back to it now. :)

Welllllll, yes and no.

When I first saw DL D&D products, it was in the 1e days, back in the mid-80s. The modules were, in my opinion, complete railroad jobs, and the guy who DM'd them for me played them as written. So, my hat of teh DragonLance knew no limit. And I kept it. As recently as this time last year, I was all, "DL sucks. Won't play it for love or money."

Recently however, a player in my home game started up his own 3.5 game, using the DL setting. I've played in his game, and enjoyed it greatly. But he has clearly stated he doesn't give a darn about any plotline from novels, meta plot in the books, or following canon at all. So from my position as a player, it comes of as a dragon flavored homebrew, with lots of filthy theiving halflings that I need to keep an eye on. ;)

Not bad so far. Still waiting for supplement material on Taladas, minotaurs, and Knights of Solamnia.
