Decided I'd try to make it for one day, and managed to sneak out there Sunday.
Went over to a buddy's house and gave him $50 bones to drive. Figured that'd be about what i'd be paying.
Got to the convention some odd three hours latter.
Wasn't feeling too good at this point for some reason.
Got my general badge pretty quick. I was glad to see that the lines were reasonable this year.
Went into the exhibition hall. Looks like they moved the art show in there. I could've swore that it was in a different spot last year, no in the exhibition hall.
Bought both volumes of Order of the Stick. I've read it on the web for a while and figured that this isn't something I'm going to be getting at the local hobby store.
Checked out Offworld creations I believe their called. They do t-shirts and other bits. Bought three shirts for my girlfriend. Raised by Bats, Perky Goth and one of the Gloom card game shirts.
Checked out one of the places selling weapons. BOught my girlfriend's mother a knife. Inexpensive thing but she likes the way they look.
Stopped by Expedious Retreat. Was given a review copy of the beast builder. Looks pretty slick so far. Also bought the Forest mini-monster book and the Fiery Dragon counters for it. Actually, I went to buy the Fiery Dragon counters and Susie was like, "You know that it's a deal on the set if you buy them both?" and I was like... brain not working... Fiery Dragon counters for FOREST and monsters for FOREST and then said, "Uh yeah, I meant to grab that." Chatted with them a bit about the upcoming Silk Road project that Suzie's working on and how they were enjoying the convention in general.
Feeling a little worse at this time. Stop by Paradigm's both. Spoke with Eric for a few minutes about the RPGA because I know that they have a huge presence there and as I posted a few days ago, I'm wondering exactly what the RPGA actually does now. After speaking with Eric, I'm more interested in finding out about local and near chapters of the RPGA and seeing what they're about and if it's something I can get into.
Dark Furies got some odd $7 bones from me when I picked up their tavern grid map. I'm an old sucker for these types of products and still have my Shady Dragon Inn. This is like that but full color and without the cheesey NPCs.
Some where in the mess, I run into Steeve Creech. He's running all over the place like a mad man. Upset that Wildwood didn't make it in, but at this point (Sunday), there isn't much that can be done. Chat with him briefly.
Morrigan Press almost got a lot of cash from me. I saw that they were having a sale and was about to grab a lot of stuff when the dude who drove me up there asked me flat out, "Are you ever going to GM this or is this just reading material?" I weakly replied, "Well, I may use the Talislanta bestiary in d20. Look, it's dual statted." So I picked up the bestiary for use with d20. Ugh. Ugly layout and d20 stat blocks in an appendix. I don't like the way MOrrigan Press is using d20 so unless I see something awesome from them with d20, this is the last d20 book I'll be picking up from them.
Green Ronin booth was next up, but at this point I'm really feeling ill so just buy a Thieves World book. After briefly looking at it, I'm sure that between this, Grim Tales, and Black Company, I can pretty much handle almost any type of low fantasy d20 playstyle.
Fantization is a great online store and they were at the convention. I've ordered from them in the past and had good experience so decided to spend way too much money on Heresy figures that are generally not around my part of the woods. Games Plus has started stocking them, but are usually out of Big Boris so I managed to pick up quite a few pieces here, including a lot of the new ones.
Harbringer is like the only independent magazine covering miniatures. Well, it's more like a giant ad for many miniature companies, but I like to see what's coming out and what's new, even if it's not here in America, so bought the two latest issues and picked up some of their unique "Harbringer" miniatures. I already have most of 'em thanks to my premier subscription, but that's recently lapsed and it's a little too much for me to afford, so the convention was an easy way to pick up some extras.
Hinterland Press I think, had a small booklet out called "When Squirrels" attack. My girlfriend is a fan of this rodent so that was another purchase for her along with their book on Circuses and Carnivals. I have a soft spot for those things all the way back to Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes.
I was supposed to stop by White Wolf's booth for a demo game of Iron Heroes, but decide that the corner looks like a better place to sit down and catch my breath.
During this time, my friends are all finished. One of 'em has bought Dundjinni. He spent most of his time doing the online D&D thing. Seemed very pleased with it.
The other felt that there was nothing worth his time here. I pointed out Soverign Stone 3.5. He said he didn't use the other books he had as it was. I pointed out Spyrcraft 2.0. He pointed out he just gave away StarGate. He was bummed that Wizards of the Coast didn't have any advanced copies. He's old school, so he remembers when TSR used to have things that wouldn't be out for months ahead of time. He was also bummed that Ravenloft was going back to WoTC and that there wasn't any new stuff for him.
At about this point I'm bathed in a nice cold sweat and feeling sicker than a dog so we head on out. Stopped in at a Bob Evan's place and after eating, I'm somewhat normal again and ready for the road. Took the old 80/94 and man, that was a mistake. Traffic for quite a ways and a five hour drive.
Overall I enjoyed the convention but should've ate in town and came back. Tried out some paint and take. Tried out the online stuff. Looked aroudn to see what else was going on. But when you feel sick and gotta go, you gotta go.
