Gen Con, Indianapolis' largest annual convention in terms of direct visitor spending, reported record attendance for its last trip to town for a while.

The convention, a haven for gamers, racked up a turnstile attendance of more than 82,000 last month.

Those visitors, according to the Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association, contributed about $40 million to the hospitality industry.

After three years in Indianapolis, the convention will move to another city in 2006 because it has outgrown the Indiana Convention Center. It may return once the venue is expanded, organizers say.

Wow 82,000.

Where to next? And is it too early to make reservations.

Huh. I could have sworn that GenCon was staying in Indy through 2006, but might be leaving in 2007. I wonder if something changed...

Funky. I hope they don't take too long to announce where it'll be.

I went to Orgins that had like 18000 and I went to Gen Con and it was not 4 times as crowded.....That number has to be off.....

Looks like we outgrew it!

I would be down with anywhere I can get a direct flight for cheap. Crap, now we have to get used to a new town. Bye bye embassy, we will miss you!

Aaron.

Are they held in the exact same space, for the exact same number of days, with the exact same logistics?

of course not and that doesn't matter because for 60,000 more people you don't need it to be to be able to notice it or not.

Actually, that's not really accurate. A larger room, or a more spread-out crowd, can make the place seem a lot less crowded than it actually is. Add in a large number of people who went for other events and didn't spend much time in the dealer room, and people who only attended for one day, and I can definitely see the cons differing by that amount.

Well, sure it is possible, but as I was there at both of them and I hung out in many different places over both 4 day cons its something you notice. That's a significantly greater number of people, it would be noticed.
