So, who else has bought GURPS Banestorm?

First Post
GURPS Banestorm is the rerelease of Steve Jackson Games old fantasy world of Yrth. In many ways, it is a fairly "standard" fantasy world, but it does have a couple of twists.

A long time ago, Yrth was only inhabited by elves, dwarves, and orcs. The dwarves and elves occasionally warred or traded with each other, but mostly left each other alone, while the orcs fought everyone, including themselves. Then, about a thousand years ago, a cabal of elves had enough of this constant warfare and performed a mighty magical ritual to cast a "great bane" upon the orcs. Their ritual failed... catastrophically. Or perhaps it did suceed - it is hard to say now.

The resulting magical backlash not only shattered elven civilization, but also weakened the barrier between the worlds, and a large number of beings were transported from other worlds - including medieval Earth. Small in number, it took the newcomers a long time to recover - but eventually, they founded their own kingdoms, discovered magic (sometimes with the help of some friendly elves), and gradually explored the continent and drove the orcs into the remaining wilderness.

And thus it came to be that in the Year of the Lord 2005 there are still crusades by the Christian kingdoms against the Muslim nations...

For the most part, the book is setting information - there is little in the way of rules. It should be pretty easy to use d20 for it, though magic needs some adjustment - there is no true "divine magic" (wizards can cast healing spells instead), and those who do have magical talent tend to focus on it exclusively instead of being some sort of "hybrid spellcasters" (though there are exceptions). Some variant of the Midnight magic system would probably work well, though perhaps with faster energy recovery and earlier access to damaging spells...

Anyway, I suggest you check it out if you are interested in new fantasy worlds - especially if you are bored of the "same old, cliched fantasy religions"...

I get to wait until November, then I'll have the money for a copy. Though I'm not adverse to getting one as a gift. :) (And GURPS Powers when it comes out.)

From the Banestorm thread over at the Pyramid newsgroups I got the impression that these days it's folks from Earth of 2005 who end up on Yrth when a banestorm hits. Makes me wonder, what if a modern day Iraqi infantry brigade wound up in one of Yrth's Muslim nations? With the typical Iraqi enthusiasm for democracy would they even be considered Muslims?

Well, the Banestorm has appeared at later occasions, though never again with the same intensity. Basically, it's a GM's tool to introduce whatever they want from Earth...

As long as they observe the Five Pillars of Islam, there is no reason why they shouldn't be. Of course, the politics involving them might get ugly - wizards wanting to hush them up, the local ruler wanting to use them against their enemies...

And of course, the Shiite/Sunni division causes plenty of problems in modern-day Iraq - and these problems might continue on Yrth.

Is Jim Morrison still mentioned in it?

I'm not quite sure, but I don't think so.

However, there is certainly enough room for him on Yrth. Or Elvis, for that matter.

Besides, given that Yrth is already "officially" part of the Infinite Worlds setting, it is entirely possible that the Banestorm might snatch people from parallel Earths...

I bought GURPS4e Banestorm three days ago at the Spiel '05 in Essen - and right now I'm preparing a brand-new campaign for this great setting...

Any ideas on the specific region where you will set the campaign?

How are the maps?

I have the old ones including the tri-city, Tredroy. (I think that's what it's called.)

Any prewritten adventurers?

What's the suggested starting ponts?

Any variants in it for spellcaster, etc..?

Judge for yourself - all the maps can be downloaded here.

Well, the old adventures from GURPS Fantasy Adventures are available at e23, but nothing specifically written for 4e yet. Still, I'd wager that that is only a matter of time, and any writer willing to write one for e23 will probably be well received...

What's the suggested starting ponts?

Up to the GM - there are suggestions ranging from 25-75 points ("Ordinary Folks/Heroes by Neccessity") to 250+ points ("Living Legends"). There are plenty of things to do for characters of any level of experience and power.

Any variants in it for spellcaster, etc..?

The book introduces Mystics - people who through their faith can exhibit near-miraculous powers. These can be powerful, but are usually rather limited in their scope. But they are rare, and ordinary spellcasting is much more common. And there aren't any true variants for the latter - if you are looking for those, GURPS Fantasy is the better bet. After all, Yrth was designed with standard GURPS magic in mind...

Well, in version I used to have (which would be the 1st or 2nd edition, I don't remember, it would be around 1990 or so), it does make a brief mention of Jim Morrison getting pulled in. Which I thought was neat, being a Doors fan.
