Mage Teas

Ethy set a black powder in a small vial, and then flushed water through it, which flowed down an elaborate system of tubes into a large glass vessel, capped the top with her palm and began to breathe through a pipe from the larger vessel, bubbling the liquid in the large vessel. After a few seconds, intense aromas came from the tea device.

Ethy calmly drank the tea, closing her eyes with each sip. She dreamily took her time drinking the tea. Panda nudged Bijou to look at Katual, who was sucked up in watching Ethy. The little Hsien quipped "Look. Balcunian love."

Katual asked Ethy for a sip, and the two shared the glass of tea, which smelt far stronger than any other Balcunian tea that Bijou and Panda had smelled before.

Ethy and Katual concluded the glass vessel of tea, and then proceeded to flirt with illusions.

Panda couldn't help but notice that these were some extraordinarily long-lived spells...

The Balcunians to the west have always been famous for their fascination with tea. Being a nation of decadent wizards, they have long since blended the two traditions. By selecting specific plants and then growing them in magic-soaked gardens, the wizard-philosophers of Balcunia have created a drink that enhances the imbiber's spells. Balcunian teas come in three grades of potency: lesser, fine, and aged.

Balcunian teas essentially allow the user to enhance their next spell cast with the metamagic effect of the tea. The type of tea determines the metamagic feat applied, and the grade determines the level of spell the tea can affect: lesser teas can enhance spells between 0th and 3rd level, fine teas can affect 6th level and lower, and aged teas can enhance spells up to 9th level. If the caster casts a spell of a level too high for the tea, or if the metamagic feat cannot be applied to the spell (such as trying to Extend a fireball spell, the energy of the tea dissipates and also is wasted. A body can hold the energy of the tea for an hour, after which it harmlessly dissipates and is wasted. The prices given are for enough tea for a single cup and thus, a single spell.

Balcunian Longleaf: The most common mundane tea drank among Balcunians, Balcunian Longleaf has a complicated flavor and rich red-brown coloration. Longleaf adds the Enlarge Spell metamagic feat to the drinker's next spell cast.
Caster Level: 3rd. Market Value: 300 gp (lesser); 1100 (fine); 2450 (aged).
Prerequisites: Brew Potion, Enlarge Spell, 5 ranks in Knowledge (Herbalism).

Coulubran Gold: Coulubra is a sour tasting herb that the tea refining process does no favors for. Infamous for being a soak for magic, the plant has long been held in favor by mages. Coulubran Gold is a yellow tea distilled from the Coulubra plant. Coulubra's ability to absorb and store magic make it invigorate the imbiber's next spell, bolstering it with the Empower Spell Metamagic Feat.
Caster Level: 3rd. Market Value: 900 gp (lesser); 3250 (fine); 7300 (aged).
Prerequisites: Brew Potion, Empower Spell, 10 ranks in Knowledge (Herbalism).

Ephemeris Leaf: Ephemeris is a strong-tasting Balcunian Herb that takes two years to sprout from seed to harvestable form. After the proper magical refinements, the tea form of this herb can lend this quality to the imbiber's spells, adding the Extend Spell metamagic feat to the drinker's next spell cast.
Caster Level: 3rd. Market Value: 300 gp (lesser); 1100 (fine); 2450 (aged).
Prerequisites: Brew Potion, Extend Spell, 5 ranks in Knowledge (Herbalism).

Sixfinger: Named for its six leaved stems, the Sixfinger plant will sprout without warning, and die within 12 hours, leaving 3 seeds in its place. Enterprising Balcunians realized the magic of this plant, and created a process for making tea from it. Sixfinger tea adds the Quicken Spell metamagic feat to the user's next spell.
Caster Level: 3rd. Market Value: 3500 gp (lesser); 7550 (fine); 17000 (aged).
Prerequisites: Brew Potion, Quicken Spell, 20 ranks in Knowledge (Herbalism).

Starshot Glory: Made from a rare, dangerously psychotropic herb, Starshot Glory tea is a sought-after item. Quaffing the tea brings a feeling of euphoria and energy. This energy enhances the drinker's next spell with the Maximize Spell metamagic feat.
Caster Level: 3rd. Market Value: 1400 gp (lesser); 5400 (fine); 12150 (aged).
Prerequisites: Brew Potion, Maximize Spell, 15 ranks in Knowledge (Herbalism).

To derive pricing, I took the price of a metamagic feat rod with the same effect and knocked a zero off to compensate for the one-use clause of the teas.

Pretty interesting idea. Do you imagine these being used in dungeon crawls or other similar series of combat encounters?

"Wait, don't enter the 2nd floor of the dark wizard's castle, yet. It's tea time, for bloody sake!"

Well, it could happen. The balcunians did invent a device to make tea in less than a minute, provided hot water is availiable.

Balcunian tea is powdered, much like traditional Japanese green tea. it is added to the defuser vial, while warm water is placed in the drinking vessel. A small amount of warm water is placed in the diffuser vial with the tea, and the user cups his hand over the mouth of the drinking vessel and pulls air through the frothing pipe, agitating the warm water with the tea powder in it, effectively making tea.

You have caster levels, market values and prerequisites, but no XP costs to create. Is that deliberate? The teas are quite powerful, acting like potions with metamagic effects, and I think they should cost more than just GP.

The creation costs are implied. The values listed with the items are merely market values. The cost to create, for example, a cup of Fine Coulubra Gold tea would require the maker have the brew potion and empower spell feats, 10 ranks in knowledge (herbalism), spend half of 3250 (1625 gp) and sacrifice 1/25th of 3250 (130 xp) in xp to make the item.

3.0 to the bone, baby. Definitions and all.

Do you plan to have a way to preserve the teas, treating them like potions, so several doses can be taken adventuring, or is that implied also and I just missed it? Because I got the impression that the tea needed to be drank soon after brewing to be effective.

I figure you'd need to take powdered tea with you, and brew it on the spot. A Balcunian Tea Device would make this a full round action to make.
