my first inspiration for a scion of Suldek, the god of murder, is actually from a conversion we recently did for the CC - Ma Yuan!

now, first of all, instead of "killer OF the gods," i want to remake him as a "killer FOR the gods" - sort of the guy who the gods hire if they want to take someone out (he works for Pappy for free, anyone else pays).

first goal - what should be his CR?

High twenties? We don't want a Colossal Ma Yuan-style combat-blender here. We want someone who sneaks into the party's room, disembowels one and hangs him by his own guts without waking up the rest of the party. Then uses his blood to write "a warning from Suldek" (or whichever god the party offended) on the walls. But if the party do somehow wake up, he should be a considerable challenge.

Also, since he's getting payment from the gods, he should have a whole bunch of artifacts that they paid him with. A divine assassin doesn't accept gold!
 



i don't see him as a big powerhouse, so CR 28 should probably be sufficient.

to be effective as an assassin, either we should lower his size from Colossal, or just give him the ability to alter his size/shape (option #2 is probably more useful, though we can definitely do both).

i'm likely to outfit him with a decent number of SAs and SQs, so a super-high HD shouldn't be all that important. suggestions?

i like it! here's what i was thinking. the original had an artifact that turns into any weapon he wants. instead of that, his item could be like a teleporter that brings any item he owns to him and returns things to his hiding place. if he has a large cache of weapons and other useful items, this would be very beneficial to him. sort of like a bag of holding extraordinaire. :)
 

Some suggested abilities for him:

Typical assassin stuff (sneak attack, death attack, hide in plain sight)

Powerful poison

Some of the bloodhounds "mark" abilities (like we gave the dhour) to help him track down his prey and/or ranger tracking abilities (swift tracker, etc.)

The ability to utterly destroy those he assassinates (like the barghest's feed) or trap their souls.
 

definitely yep on all of that. :)

comments on HD? size?

i figure his HD should be in the high 30-s to low 40s range.
 

If it's an outsider, all the CR 28 archfiends and celestial pargaons fall in the 34-36 HD range.

I'd probably make him Huge, with powerful alternate form ability.
 

the archfiends and celestial paragons won't figure into this cosmology, but they can still be used for comparison purposes in case anyone else wants to use the Scions for their own world. ;)

36-HD then?
