Creatures-By-Poll: Fey

BOZ

Creature Cataloguer
been awhile since i organized one of these. ;)

i was thinking of sending in a Fey query to Dragon mag much like the Plant one i sent in. it seems clear that the staff loves conversions, but they actually want to see new creatures more. so... let's go for it. :)

here's the rules for this one. i'm starting out with 5 polls; each one determines one of the integral parts of the creature. the most popular option from each poll determines the attributes for the first creature. the second most popular option from each poll determines the attributes for the second creature, and the third most popular options determine the third creature. i may do a 4th and 5th one if i feel like it.

after we have the attributes for each fey, we will expand on the basic framework of each one, and start assigning things like ability scores and powers and such.

Why you still soft-bump?

On an unrelated note, I sent you a mail yesterday, but I just saw a failure notice email in my spam folder (don't ask my why it'd end up there). I presume you did not receive it, them?

Might as well close a few of these polls - some of them are pretty much a done deal:

Alignment: CN
Main attribute: Virtue/vice
Hit Dice: 4-6 (tie with 1-3, but there's many more votes for >6 than for <1)

You may also want to consider doing one big runoff poll with the top choices of the remaining polls. E.g.

Quote:
Which of these features should our Fey creature have?
[] Environment: Marsh
[] Environment: Hills
[] Environment: Urban
[] Size: Small
[] Size: Medium
[] 2 HD
[] 3 HD
[] 4 HD
[] 5 HD
[] Virtue/vice: do-gooder
[] Virtue/vice: wicked destroyer
[] Virtue/vice: maintains the balance in nature

Well, I didn't so much mean actually closing them, rather than just calling them done and moving on...

actually, i just realized that i can close a poll - by closing the thread. i have done that with three of the polls: alignment and environment will remain open for the moment, hoping for a few more votes to break some of the ties before moving on. for some of these results, i may simply pick and choose what to go with.

Let's extrapolate 5 creatures, given the current poll results, shall we?

Creature #1
Hit Dice: (1-3 or 4-6)
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Main Attribute: Virtue/Vice
Environment: Marsh
Size: Medium

Creature #2
Hit Dice: (1-3 or 4-6)
Alignment: (LN, N, or CE)
Main Attribute: Animal/vegetable/minerals
Environment: (Hills or urban)
Size: Small

Creature #3
Hit Dice: 7-9
Alignment: (LN, N, or CE)
Main Attribute: (magic/psionics or another creature type)
Environment: (Hills or urban)
Size: (Tiny or Large)

Creature #4
Hit Dice: 10-12
Alignment: (LN, N, or CE)
Main Attribute: (magic/psionics or another creature type)
Environment: (desert or plains)
Size: (Tiny or Large)

Creature #5
Hit Dice: (16-18 or 22+)
Alignment: (NG, CG, NE)
Main Attribute: Stellar spirit - sun, moon, planets, stars, zodiac
Environment: (desert or plains)
Size: Huge

Ah - I forgot you were going to do several fey at the same time.

So - how do you plan to continue with this? Seems like you'd need to eliminate some of those "OR's" from your 5 creatures before we can move on to flesh them out further. First of all, you can eliminate some of the options by linking HD to size. So you would get:

Creature #1
Hit Dice: 4-6
Size: Medium

Creature #2
Hit Dice: 1-3
Size: Small

Creature #3
Hit Dice: 7-9
Size: Tiny

Creature #4
Hit Dice: 10-12
Size: Large

Creature #5
Hit Dice: (16-18 or 22+)
Size: Huge

During a clear new moon, it is said that the astrological creatures of the zodiac descend upon the plains to dance the dance of ages.

Since many of the animals corresponding to signs of the zodiac already have stats in D&D, you could even make this one a template. Call it "Avatar of the Zodiac" or something: take the base animal (e.g. Lion), enlarge it to size Huge and color it pitch black, with stars as eyes. A bit rough, but you get the idea...

Alternatively, you could design a base creature, and have a table with 1-2 additional abilities for each different sign. Would be much easier to balance that way...

I like that second idea. The shape of the Zodiacan would be dependant on what sign they were in, with mostly the same stats.

Oh, and BOZ, I know that you're intending to do all the fey by poll, but I have an urban, CE, 10 HD, medium fey kicking around my hard-drive. It got cut from my last Dragon submission, and I'm really proud of 'im. If I could slip it into this discussion/statting somehow, that'd be cool. If not, I'll probably post it in Homebrews.

Any chance you could make it Large and shoehorn it into #4?

Heck, if we like it well enough, we could just have a poll on whether or now we want to adopt it for #4, or continue polling for that one...

It's a springheel, taken from the British legend of Springheel Jack, murderous wicked creatures that delight in leaping upon random folks and terrorizing them with iron claws and fiery spittle. It was Medium in the stories (because its appearance is mostly human), but I am willing to comprimise. With BOZ's permission, I can post it as it stands in this thread.

how about this: we can piggyback your fey critter into whatever query i construct before sending it in. you would of course get authorship credit, as knight otu did for MotM. go ahead and post it in homebrews so it won't get lost; we will pick it up later when/if it's needed. also, more than one Dragon designer has suggested that "leftover" monsters are likely to appear in CCV this year, so your contribution may not be needed if that is the case.

besides that, we will be creating 5 new creatures with these polls, and adding those along with any fey conversions we like in the query.

No, no, that's where the rest of that article is ending up. The query was "monsters from the real world". The Jersey Devil, sasquatch, mammoth octopus and springheel didn't make the cut. The other two did.

I'll post him in Homebrews.

So, how do we go from here? Polls for each of the 5 critters separately? We can always carry over some of the second-place options from a poll to the poll for the next critter in line...

You know, BOZ... I can understand doing a poll to see which 5 out of a large range of options people like best. And I could understand doing additional polls to figure out how people want to combine those options.

But the current polls you're running don't really make sense to me. I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish... do you want creature #1 to be some unholy combination of all the favorite features, regardless of how well they actually fit together, and #5 an equally mismatched combination of all the second (or rather 5th) rate features? Wouldn't #5 wind up being sort of a "garbage heap" creature - just throwing together all the features hardly anybody really wants?

It's an interesting experiment, but not really a mechanism that is likely to lead to creatures people will actually *like*.

Don't want to poop on your party or anything... just felt I needed to point that out before we do another 30-40 polls along the same lines...

now that the skeleton/groundwork is laid down, the most popular options for each one can be decided. i think you can make something good out of any idea, and seemingly random things can yeild combinations you would not have otherwise thought of. besides, randomness has always been a big part of D&D - why the dice, if not?

OK, narrowing down #4 some more, but i will start a thread for discussion on #1 shortly...

[end recovery]

Hey BOZ, do you need any help recovering these threads from the Google cache? I see at least #4 and #5 are still in there...

OK, after 5+ long months of anticipation, we have our 5 unique, original ideas for fey! :)

now, the next step is to set up our five queries. you remember how we did that for the plant queries, right? :) yep, big ol' monster poll with every single fey creature on it, and whatever gets the most votes gets grouped into appropriate categories and then we send it on.

right now, i'm going to spend a bit of time looking for all the known unconverted fey creatures and gather it into a big file o' names. for an example of how we could do this, here is the first fey query i sent out, way way back that we sent out at the same time as our Monsters of the Mind query. :)

5. Faeries – the Little People
This article would focus on the petite fey creatures out there. There are more types of fey out there to harass and annoy your PCs than the Monster Manual would have you believe! Some are malevolent, some are benign, and most are definitely mischievous. There are quite a few conversions out there to consider – so many so, that this could easily become two articles.

Asrai
Fey, CR 1/2
These are tiny, extraplanar female water sprites that live in the River Oceanus. They can hypnotize other creatures, but melt when exposed to direct sunlight. They are only a few inches tall, with long golden hair and blue green skin.
Originally found in Dragon #191

Atomie
Fey, CR 1
These are tiny sprites that play at night and live in secluded glens. They are very quick on attacks, with spell resistance and spell-like abilities. They are one-foot tall and very thin, with long limbs and light green skin, and long pointy heads.
Originally found in Monster Manual II (1983)

Booka
Fey, CR 1/2
These are tiny creatures that hide in the homes of humans. They are non-violent, but like to play pranks on evil creatures. They are a bit homely, with long pointy noses and broad ears, but have delicate butterfly wings. They can become invisible at will, and have spell resistance.
Originally found in Fiend Folio (1981)

Ekrat
Fey, CR 1/2
These are chaotic little fellows that eat magical writings, lifting the words right off the pages. They look like tiny elves, with leathery skin and dull yellow eyes.
Originally found in Dragon #94

Flitterling
Fey, CR 1/2
These are minute mushroom-living faeries that live in mushrooms (la la la la la la…). They can attack as a swarm, and use songs to charm and cause fear in opponents. They are miniature humanoids with silvery skin, and are about a quarter of an inch tall.
Originally found in Blade of Vengeance (Basic D&D module O2)

Frost
Fey, CR 1
They are winter sprites that dwell in dense arctic forests. They can control the temperature in their area, and attack with cone of cold, a cold ray, and other cold-based attacks. They are 1-foot tall, with pale blue skin, and wings like bees.
Originally found in Dragon #33

Moss Gnome
Fey, CR 2
These are small fey that are related to gnomes, and tend the plantlife of the forest. They can poison by touch, summon plants, tree stride, and other spell-like abilities. They look like gnomes with fey traits, and have hair made of vines and grasses, with brown skin and eyes the color of emeralds.
New creature

Quickling
Fey, CR 2
These are evil brownies with an unnaturally high ability to move and attack quickly. They are naturally invisible and permanently hasted, and attack with spell-like abilities and sleep daggers. They look like miniature elves with sharp, feral features, and blue-white hair and skin.
Originally found in Monster Manual II (1983)

Stwinger
Fey, CR ½
These nauseatingly cute faeries like to swing from other creatures' hair – which is more harmful than it sounds. After charming a creature into helplessness, this swinging deals subdual damage which can ultimately leave a creature unconscious. They are so incredibly cute that it requires a Will save to even attack one.
Originally found in MC14, Fiend Folio appendix

Urisk
Fey, CR 1
These satyr-like fey roam the wilderness, traveling with their animal companions. They can hide in the woods to the point of becoming nearly invisible. They look much like small satyrs, with goat heads and shaggy brown fur.
Originally found in Dragon #94

Alternates:
Bramble – minute evil fey that poison creatures with their spiky armor. (Dragon #206)
Buckawn – little neutral fellows that use poisoned daggers. (MM2, 1983)
Dobie – brownies that live to help farmers, but are easily fooled (Dragon #206)
Faerie Fiddler – fey who can perform magical feats with their music (Dragon #206)
Gorse – minute fey of exceptional beauty that can cause confusion and use Cantrips (Dragon #180)
Killmoulis – little brownies that can cause mischief or provide useful services. They are non-violent, but defend themselves with needles. (FF – 1981)
Leprechauns – small faeries that are well known for the mischief they can cause. (MM, 1977)
Squeaker – petty faeries that aggravate anything bigger than them with tricks, or by throwing objects (Dragon Mountain)

You mentioned that those fey you posted here - "Faeries – the Little People" - were part of an earlier query. Did that query ever go through, and if not, are these guys still in the running?
