Midwinter Ball Theme ideas

I'm thinking of running a midwinter ball, but I'd like to see ideas from themes from you folks rather than something I pull out of my own head. Any theme will do, old favorites, new ideas...
Post them here and the winner will have bragging rights to being the Creator of the First EnWorld Winterball Theme!

We should do a fancy dress ball. The catch is, that a random draw is what determines dancing partners.. and we could switch and draw a different partner for each dance..

I was thinking of an "Old and New" theme?

some of us could come dressed in old beat up "work/play clothes" others comes in more fancy dress? could be fun : )

How about an Ice Festival theme?

Hold the ball outdoors... have a big huge bonfire, with hot chocolate and mulled cider and wine and roasted chestnuts and all that good stuff... maybe some ice wines and sno-cones and such as well... have the dance area inside a pavillion with braziers to keep it decently warm, but also have a skating area set up, with skates available for anyone who wants to try it... maybe have a snow statue contest... anyone wanting to enter that would have to email the description of their snow whatever ahead of time, then they could all be posted as part of the decor arount the place and allthe ball attendees could vote on the best/prettiest/whatever criteria.

What about a nature themed ball? Y'know... hold in some sort of grove or illusory grove, and have like ivy vines and holly branches and such... and everyone come dressed up in like furs, or like ivy stuff, or something like that... like a druidy kinda party type thing...

Just and idea.

How about a literally old time festival ball, with entertainment.. anywhere from magicians contests with prizes to jousting and all that... knights sparring frays, and well bardic poetry, song and Dance, halfling rock slinging contests.. dwarves drinking contest just plain fun.. i mean make it more then a ball. song and Dance, it can be held in a 'winter land' event.. with Pillar tourches that provide heat in the radius of patrons.. I mean its a ball, but why not make it more festive? so other characters can get involved.. Dancing in areas, and such.. Just an idea elaborate off it.

To me a ball is just to highclass and to assume that all in the tavern are at that caliber or to exclude coomon welth of the town is kind of bleh.. so its open to all, and all of this entertainment can bring in all types without need to dress up and all that and those that want to can.

question is, where is the winter ball going to take place, for room setting.
