XP Idea

I'm looking for some feedback on an idea.

I am thinking of making all monsters worth 100 x CR squared XP as a flat rate; players divide by character level when applying it, rounding up. Do not square when determining XP for creatures with fractional CRs.

Thus, in a fight against a CR 4 critter, 1600 XP are earned. Four party members divide that among themselves for 400 each. The 1st level guy gets 400 XP, the 2nd level guy gets 200 XP, the 3rd lvl guy gets 134 XP, and the 4th level guy gets 100 XP.

I am currently using 1/2 XP and trying to speed my end of the calculations. I like the idea of accelerating low-level characters while slowing higher-level characters.

Comments? Suggestions?

Interesting idea, altho my first question is what to do about EL?

Most of my encounters are designed with a lower CR creatures backed by either terrain or tactics advantages.

It looks like I would still need an excell spreadsheet to run the calculations.. I sux at math :)

The math I was referring to was the 'each PC gains total XP divided by number of party members divided by character level'

Yup, definately a problem at higher levels. A 19th level character would have to defeat 36 creatures with a 20 CR in order to level up. {in a standard group of 4..and yes, I did that calculation in excell :) }

Despite your first thought, I would prefer using EL as the factor instead of CR..both for the reasons of my tendencies in creating encounters and to allow for using the same system to handle non-combat encounters.

You probably need someone here that is a bit more particular about math and actually uses the current XP system {and therefore could see how these changes would affect things like magic item creation, etc..}
 

Actually, I don't have a real problem with the idea of higher-level characters taking longer to level up, so the 19th level guy who takes longer to reach 20th is a good thing IMHO. The typical D&D world should have far too many Elminsters for my tastes. :D

I also use systems (similar to power components) that allow item creators to forego the XP cost of items, so I imagine that this will not be a big problem.

Anyone out there math whiz enough to tell me what I am not seeing here?

Forty, all the way down. Why? Well, Xp to next level = Current Level * 1000.

So, to get to the next level via CR = Party Level in a party of 4, you have: Level * 1000 = K (Level*Level*100/Level)/4 -> 1000 = K (Level*100/Level)/4 -> 1000 = K 100/4 -> 1000 = K 25 -> 40 = K

Current system is designed for about 13. This would slow down advancement by a lot at most levels. On the plus side, changing the base multiplier from 100 to 300 changes it to 13.33333 equal CR encounters to level up, which is book value......
 

Looks good to me...I'm not a math whiz...but I am a D&D whiz...

....I have long considered using EL as the basis of XP awards a la D20 Modern...I just keep forgetting to emplement it...and I always eyeball them anyway...

...also, I too am TERRIFIED at the thought of good well developed intriguing characters racing to 20th level by the time they're 20 YEARS OLD!!!
