Spellcraft Puzzle

Vorput

First Post
Was toying with this over the weekend, something along the lines of what Question posted awhile back.

I genned up a 4th level wizard with a +20 modifer to his spellcraft checks- how'd I do it? can you beat it?

The said wizard has an 18 intelligence, no magic items, and is core only.

I'll post the answer later, but I assume someone will get it well before I post... it's not that hard a puzzle ;) .

Close, but not the way I did it. I didn't use magic, but yeah- I probably should have specified no spells either. The other +2 bonus comes from something else core... though I suppose if I tack fox's cunning on, it becomes a +22 bonus!

4th level = 7 ranks. + 4 Int = 11
Skill Focus = 14
Magical Aptitude = 16
Synergy = 18
Specialization = 20.

You could take a level in Courtier. Whenever you skill focus you gain +4 instead of +3. But thats no only 3rd edition, but Roukugan as well.

Ranks: 7
Skill Focus: 3
Knowledge (arcana) synergy: 2
UMD synergy on scrolls: 2
Magical Aptitude: 2
Int: 4
Specialty: 2

That's +22 without magic items or spells and only for scrolls. I can't think of a way to get higher given only the core (unless something is not within the SRD). I assume a bard is not along to help, right?

Correct, no bard- the wizard is in this alone... it's a general spellcraft check, so not just on scrolls.

What's specialization? And my final +2 did come from within the SRD.

Oh, n/m- I figured out the specialization thing (chosen school)- here's the list thus far.

7 ranks.
4 int bonus.
Skill focus +3
magical aptitude +2
Know (arcane) synergy +2
The yet a mystery +2 bonus.
=+20 (and technically with specialty school and fox's cunning that can be +24 as has been pointed out- +26 to scrolls!)

It would apply to all spellcraft checks, not just your chosen school or just to scrolls. It is core, and it is within the SRD (just checked). So I guess I'm just waiting for someone to figure out the mystery bonus.

Perhaps you are allowing the existence of a masterwork tool related with Spellcraft?

Yep, you got it... sort of under-handed I know- as it's not spelled out as a spellcraft bonus, but yeah. In my campaign, they're a polished set of semi-precious gems that when looked thorugh help break the magical spectrum into its various schools and lengths (power of magic).

Tool, Masterwork
This well-made item is the perfect tool for the job. It grants a +2 circumstance bonus on a related skill check (if any). Bonuses provided by multiple masterwork items used toward the same skill check do not stack.

Well done NexH.

That is a very good (and interesting) way to explain how such a tool could work, but the problem arises when you use spellcraft in such a way that no magic auras are involved.
