Hello DC/VA/MD peoples!

It is my pleasure to bring you a discussion about a DC/VA/MD Gameday for the late winter/early spring of 2007. I know it's early, but if we're going to do this and do it right, we need to start planning early.

So, I guess, my first question is: who's willing to help out and what sort of help are you willing to offer? Do you want to volunteer to make phone calls to local gaming stores and companies to see if we can get some sponsorship/donations for door prizes/auctions? Do you want to try to help raise some funds (as we'll need a bit of money)? Do you want to donate $10 to go towards the renting if a conference room? Do you want to volunteer to put people from out-of-town up at your place? Do you want to host an independent site for advertising the gameday? There's so many things that will need to be done... and we'll need people to do all of them! And, what is more, we want a group of diverse ENW-ers to think of everything and help cover all our bases. :)

This is something that I've been dreaming about for about a year, but did not want to dedicate my time to until I could see the proverbial light at the end of the academic tunnel (and with my December graduation 100-days-away-or-so, that light is near!).

So... let's get a dialogue going!
I'm willing to do any and all of those things.

(not that I have a choice, since we're married. ;))

I can kick in some bucks so we can get a room (wait, that didn't sound right). I can also help try and track down a location -- I got a good lead from someone last night, as a matter of fact. And I can do flyers, posters, tablecards, etc. Maybe even a website if you think we need one.

Count me in for some door prizes, and $ towards space rental.

Hey Liz!

I can bring along a few door prizes, though I am sort of getting to the bottom of my pile... some things may be a bit dated (like exalted 1e books...)

Do you want to donate $10 to go towards the renting if a conference room?

I could do that.

Do you want to volunteer to put people from out-of-town up at your place?

Quite honestly, only if I know them already. But if I do (from GenCon or CM), I'd be happy to host.

I am surprised that you guys cannot get some university space. Some of you are students. Could you not request a room for the event at the student union?

I would do it at my school, but it's not easy to get to. It's way off of the beltway actually IN DC - about 1.5 miles/2 miles from the nearest metro station. Parking is expensive, as well. Additionally, I will no longer be a student at my school when this happens.

I looked into getting conference space at one of Northern VAs community college campuses, but their fees for non-students are insane (read: $100/hour just for janitorial services... and that's not just for cleanup AFTER the event, it's for the whole event).

There have been complaints about UMD as a location from various people and, as such, I was hoping that we could have it at a more central location that is easy to get to via Metro. I've got one idea that I think is really good, but I need to call and talk to the appropriate people before I make any big announcements...

Hey Liz,

I'd be willing to help out with whatever you need. And anyone who can squeeze into our 1br is welcome to stay.

A friend of mine told me that one group she belongs to (I think it's for women IT professionals) gets space at a Montgomery County community center in Bethesda, supposedly near Metro. She thought they either got it for free, or pretty cheap, since they don't have a lot of money to spend on such things and they meet fairly often. She also thought that the organizers had to be Montgomery county residents.

I did some quick digging on the web, and the facilities look nice (and there are several of the community centers scattered around), but it looked like the hours may not work. I couldn't tell if the posted hours were just for general use or also limited rental-times for other events.
