Wedding Anniversary is during GenCon – Help!

OK, this might seem like a bit early in the year to get into this, but really it’s not. :)

We got married August 17th, 2003. Of course, that means sometimes our anniversary is pretty close to GenCon and sometimes not, but I always worried that one year it might even overlap. Oh boy, was I right!

I just realized today, pointed out by the Mrs., that our actual anniversary is during GenCon this year. I figured that means going to the con would be right out, so I was going to tell her it was OK if we missed it this year – but instead, she wants to go even moreso! See, we travel without the kids, and it’s an opportunity to get out of town, and we can spend some time together alone for at least one evening on our special day.

Now, we are normally short on cash, and I think I finally learned my lesson about planning ahead – especially after last year, where we didn’t even have enough money to get into the dealer hall. :( This year, I want to pre-register our badges (which, of course, will save money) and then get a hotel room. (Normally, we sleep on our friend’s couch/floor/whatever to save money, but that simply won’t do for our 4th anniversary!) When we get our tax money, we can pre-register for the Con since that started 2/11 I think, and then we can reserve a hotel room for 1 or 2 nights as we see fit.

So, maybe there are some suggestions people have about what we can do on Friday night. :) We’ll probably go to the Con at some point that day, but we need something special to do. (Last year the “special” thing we did was to spend 8 hours folding, sorting, washing, and putting away our laundry, so we have two years worth of stuff to make up for!)

We will almost certainly be broke again by the time the Con comes around, but maybe there is somewhere fun we can go in Indy. Any ideas? :)

Something special doesn't necessarily have to cost money. I know nothing about Indy but it how meaningful the gesture is that counts.

Is your wife a gamer? If so, just a few ideas:

If she has a favorite author or designer, then try seeing if you can arrange a short meeting with the designer or author. Most game designers are the salt of the earth types who will take a moment or more for a special cause (like an anniversary).

Another idea: Arrange with the number of ENWorlders for a night out and have them do a 'tribute to gaming spouses' or something like a bunch of them putting on their best or worst bard apparel and have the group seranade her with a song.

Another idea: If you got some small amount of corrdination and have someone to practice with, look at borrowing some prop or replica swords and work out a small duel routine. Then during a ENWorld gathering, out of the blue, fight for her honor with the person you have been practicing with. Make a production of it.

The important thing is that whatever it is makes her seem special.

Anniversaries come and go and gifts and special dinners are soon forgotten. But arrange a few moments just for her with Monte Cook (or who ever, for example) or have a duel in her honor or have some of the zany ENWorlders woo her in a fine faux bard tradition - that is special and will always be remembered by both of you.

The anniversary my wife most remembers is the time the anniversary that was during a SCA meet. Out of the blue, before my fight, I made a production of approaching her , asking her for a token of her affection to affix to my armor and loudly announced that I would battle all comers "For the honor and affection of my lady". This in front of a crowd of several hundred people. Then got cheered on by the crowd as I bested my five opponents one by one.

That anniversary of all others she remembers best - because I make a point of letting everyone know she was special in a unforgetable way.

i don't think the duel thing would work - but you never know. ;)

she's not really a gamer, but she does like to hang out with me, and sometimes plays along.

...that is totally hot.

Heh. BOZ, I was going to give you the :laughat: smilie about having to miss GenCon, but that's actually pretty cool.

Hope to bump into you there.

There is a very nice park area not too far from GenCon. In fact I walked through it to get to the Zoo. ITs about a 10 minute walk from the GenCon halls. You go past a couple of museums as well.

Anyways, if the weather is good, a nice picnic in the park, by the river, may be just the thing.

Standing on that bridge, looking up and down the river, is very scenic as well.
