Stargate Thingy.

Sir Elton

First Post
Would a campaign taking off from Stargate SG-1 be viable?

Formula: The Stargate is a magic gate that can gate to thousands of other worlds (Eldritch Device!) by dialing an address. Player characters travel to other fantasy worlds.

hmm?

Okay, here is the setup. I got the Production design almost completed.

[sblock=Formula, Theme, and Tone]
Formula: The Stargate is a magic gate that can gate to thousands of other worlds (Eldritch Device!) by dialing an address. Player characters travel to other fantasy worlds to battle the Inspired, who rule the galaxy.

Theme: Adventure and excitement.

Tone: Drama, Action, and wonder.[/sblock]

[sblock=Backstory.]
On Earth, humans have come about. Rumored to be the Galaxy's second evolution of the Human Form. The humans find the Stargate Network that was built by the Ancients. The humans of Earth then use the Stargate Network to explore and settle other worlds.

Humanity soon expanded and explored as far as Faerun, Eberron, Aebyrnis, Oerth, Athas, Yrth, Krynn, and thousands of other worlds. However, on Sarlona, Humanity was certainly taken over by the Quori and became the Inspired.

The Humans on Earth, knowing what they have done, took the Stargate in Egypt to North America in the Great Salt Lake Valley in the vast Basin and Range Desert. there, they buried it to prevent the Inspired from coming to Earth and conquering the planet. Meanwhile, the Inspired left Eberron and used the network to build a Galactic Empire: which included Faerun, Oerth, and Aebyrnis. Their system ships patroling their galactic empire using Astral Jump Drives and Globes of Force.

Only recently, two groups of humans who were persecuted for their religious and philosophical beliefs, migrated into the Great
Salt Lake Valley to be able to believe and worship as they please.

They founded Salt Lake City (Salt Lake City), Hunter Village (West Valley City), Ogden (Ogden), and Psionica (Provo). They unburied the Gate while building Hunter Village and set it up in the middle of their village. However, everything changed when the gate opened and an Inspired Lord appeared with his Half-Giant Guards. He then ook a young woman with him through the gate. Now, Stargate Command is formed to find a way to defend Earth from the Inspired and to seek peaceful relations with other planets.[/sblock]

[sblock=Stargate Command]
Stargate Command is located in a enclave that is much like this one. in the Center of the large space below is the Stargate. Stargate Command is composed of barracks, a Headquarters, a gymnasium, a hospital, and a church house.

Hospital
Three doctors following different kinds of medicine disciplines practice here along with their personell. The first doctor is Galen of Syracuse -- a young doctor who is a disciple of Hippocrates. His healing skill is connected to Intelligence. The second doctor is a Chinese doctor who is also a monk. He specializes in herbs and accupuncture. The third doctor is Allyssa of the Healing Touch; she is a Chakra healer specializing in the the healing touch.

[sblock=Hunter Village]
Hunter Village is arranged in a circular fashion. It has shops and restuarants, and many homes. It even has about three hostels. Most of the people in Hunter Village do not drink alcoholic drinks or smoke any kind of a plant. The place is beautiful with many trees and gardens. There is even a few farms and a big farm.

Government
Hunter Village's government is like the government in the Region. The people where forced to move into the Salt Lake Valley because of their religious and philosophical beliefs. As a result, the Government is very small, everyone is allowed to Govern themselves as they see fit. This form of government has the appearance of Anarchy, but it isn't really (control rating 1, NG). As a result, the people are extraordinarily free. This scares tyrants, kings, and the Shadow Government.

Fashion
Another thing the elite doesn't like about visiting Salt Lake City is the extraordinary way everyone is free to wear or not wear what they want as they please. Nudity is extraordinarily common throughout the region and this is because the people know that they are free and can control their sexual drives. Although it seems like a place where lascivious acts are commited on a daily basis, they really aren't being committed. Adulterers and perverts are bannished from the land on their second offense. The people are completely in control of their individual selves.

The only place where clothes are required 24/7 is in the Stargate Command enclave, where many alien visitors from other planets often come to visit.[/sblock]

They have conquered numerous worlds using the Rune Gate network (the Imaskari of Faerun also used the Rune Gate network).[/sblock]

What About Bad Guys...

I think part of what makes the Stargate series work is the universal bad guy. The Gaould tied everyone together. (Did I even come close on the spelling?) They helped make all independent adventures on far flung worlds part of an integrated whole. If you don't have this, and you are still having them adventure on a bunch of far flung worlds, how are you going to tie everyone and everything together into a single campaign?

Overall, I think it's a great idea. There is a lot of potential in such a scenario.

Do make sure you lay out exactly what from the series/movie is going to make it into the game and exactly what will not. (i.e. No spaceships, no Gaould, no zats, whatever.)

If you do have a bad guy with lots of magic items (i.e. staff weapons and zats) watch out for the smart players. When I watch Stargate the series and I see SG-1 wipe out whole groups of bad guys and then leave all those high tech weapons just lying around when they could easily be brought through the gate, it makes my head hurt. Then they have an episode where their allies need weapons and I think, "Hey, if you had just picked up some of that stuff...."

It's OOP, but there is a Stargate SG-1 d20 game by AEG using a variation of the Spycraft rules. While you would want to keep many core D&D rules to keep it fantasy, the core book and the two supplements they made before Sony pulled the license could prove useful to such a game.

I have Stargates (well, "Rainbow Portals") in my Greyhawk campaign. It's not the core theme of the campaign, but they're definitely there.

Definitely a good theme for a campaign.

Cheers!

Well given that Stargate itself basically just ripped the idea wholecloth out of fantasy I don't see why not?
Even the Stargate prop looked like some old planescape art of planar gates.

Usually in campaigns I've gm'ed or played in the gates have gone to another Plane, but they've also gone to other settings on occasion.

If the point is to prevent the bad guys from invading Earth through the Gate, why not just bury it again? Or blow it up? Or Plane Shift it elsewhere, Or, or, or? If I were playing in such a game my character's main goal would be to destroy the Gate and Solve the D@mn Problem!

Or better yet teleport the Gate into orbit then dial up their territories and suck all the atmosphere off their planets. No population, no enemy.

Uhm, you are aware that the Big Bad Guys are capable of SpellJamming, right? They can just attack Earth the old fashioned way == in a Spelljammer Galleon.

I believe so. Goa'uld. You were missing the Apostrophe. :D

Actually the Universal Bad Guy are the Inspired. The Quori is just too cool to pass up. Even though Manshoon will appear every once in a while to annoy the heck out of the players. Then there's Semmenon. And Elminster when he's really cranky . . . (I hate super powerful NPCs who can get rid of the Realms' problems with one flick of a finger, but doesn't.)

That doesn't work. Haven't you been watching Stargate: Atlantis? The Wraiths' gate is orbiting the planet.

Seems odd to have paladins and rangers but not clerics and druids. Are the divine magics suppresed somehow?
