Since I am as much a resources and survival oriented DM as a story-oriented one, I remind players to tick off rations and use basic everyday tasks as a means of providing flavor text while describing scenes. . . "You are on watch, chewing on a piece of salted beef, when. . ." or "You head out deeper in the woods to dig a hole and do your business when you noticed a whole area of the forest that. . ."
You get the picture.
I also get a kick out of describing the luscious banquets at fancy inns or at balls and other social functions, as my players really respond to immersion and the character's desire to eat "good food" as compared to what they usually eat on the road.
