D&D 4E Star Wars Saga Edition as preview of 4e?

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=starwars/article/SagaPreview1

So, we've got:
  • Fewer yet more flexible base classes that have incorporated Talent Trees ala d20 Modern
  • Flatter hit points curve--you start at 1st level with 3 HD, but advance more slowly and (presumably) top off lower in total hit points
  • Defense (Armor Class?) rolled up into saving throws
Anyway, along with a lot of rather vague talk about streamlining of the rules in combat to be previewed still, what do you think of these as possible directions for 4e to go as well? To be honest with you, I think they're kinda exciting. Before today, I would have told you that I had no interest in 4e and probably would be an extremely late (if ever) adopter of the ruleset when it comes out. If this is a preview of what 4e might look like, though, I may start singing a different tune.

I don't know. I like some of the stuff that I hear (e.g., d20 Modern like trees), but there are other changes that either I am not thrilled about (e.g., combining of skills) or don't know enough about to make a decision.

These changes might be included, might not. Sort of hard to say when, as far as we know, no designers have even been approached about developing 4e. :)

But they look great to me. I'll definitely be picking up a copy of the Saga edition.

I suspect 4e will have one hit die per level. That's quite a sacred cow there. :)

But I hope it has some well-tested rules for lower HP variants and the like!

I hope this is a preview of 4e. It may be just what WOTC needs to do to get me interested in D&D again. Until then, I'm afraid my heart (and money) belongs to GURPS 4e.

In short, IMHO, a lot of sacred cows need to be sent to the meat factory.

That was exactly my thought too. I mean, yeah--we don't know if this is a preview of what 4e will look like or not of course, and it may not be at all--but if it is, then I'm actually somewhat excited about 4e. If not, then 4e's got an uphill struggle to convince me that I care about it.

I think what's being done to the Star Wars RPG is to try to make it more like *Star Wars*, to emulate the feel of the movies. I don't think what's being done in this new edition necessarily has anything to do with changes which might be in a (theoretical) new D&D edition.

Wow. Those changes for the Saga Edition are almost identical to the changes I am planning to incorporate in my next D&D game. This has two effects:

(1) I am now 100% certain that will buy a copy of the book
(2) If 4E is redesigned along the same lines, I'm sold
