What do you do for... Sorcerers?

I find most players I know gravitate towards warlocks or warmages instead of sorcerers, so I beef them up a bit and give them some color. IMC, sorcerers gain Diplomacy, Gather Info and UMD as class skills. They can swap out their familiar for a wizard feat. They gain bonus "Heritage" feats at levels 1, 6, 11,and 16.

It's that time again. This one should be a popular topic - what do you do for sorcerers?
My sorcs are "fey-based," owing their magical heritage to the blood of faeries instead of dragons. So, I give them an animal companion instead of a familiar (effective druid level equal to sorc level), and pull their spells from the Druid list instead of the Sor/Wiz list. (These spells are still cast as arcane spells, and are still based on Charisma.) Other than that, everything's per the SRD.

Use a modified warlock instead of sorcerer. Their heritage can be just about anything: dragon, fey, outsider, etc. How it should have been to begin with.

One of the nicest small additions that I've come across is that they get a highest level spell slot before they get a spell to put in it e.g. at 5th level sorcerer, their spells known is as per the book, but their spell slots has an additional '0' 3rd level slot, that can be used for metamagiked 1st and 2nd level spells.

Personally I think giving them UMD as a class skill makes sense.

I would also give them the alternate class feature from PHB II, ditching the familiar and allowing them to cast metamagic with no penalty to the time taken to cast.

Cheers

I've been doing that since early 3.0e. Perhaps I made it up long ago? That, or someone else out there is brilliant. ;)

Anyway, I also give UMD as a class skill, Eschew Materials at 1st level and a Heritage feat or Metamagic feat at 5th, 10th, 15th & 20th levels.

They get Eschew Materials as a freebie. Not completely sure about UMD as a class skill but doubt it would make much difference in practice so I'm OK with it (that means you can have it, Plane Sailing).
Less sure about the metamagic casting time thing. Seems to me that taking longer to cast a MM spell is a reasonable balance to not having to prepare it MMd in advance. (that means you can't do it [yet] PS).

And I'll think about the MMspell slot idea (nice in principle, though).

The other nice thing it does for Sorcerers is allow them into some PrCs "early" (as in, when Wizards can qualify). Not PrCs which require access to a specific spell, but for PrCs which merely require access to a specific spell-level.

Like Arcane Trickster, Eldrich Knight or Spellsword.

  • Eschew Materials @ 1st
  • Slightly less freedom in spell choice overall, but on the other hand, slightly more spells known. This results from the adaptation and incorporation of 'threads' (which are a bit domain-like, with vaguely reminiscent attendant powers that are gained at later levels) from which a certain proportion of spells known must be drawn.
  • 4 + Int skill points (well, 5. . . but never mind that for now).
  • Persuasion (which, again, is a story for another time), Sense Motive and UMD as class skills, as well as other tweaks here, due to general house rules. In fact, other classes have lost UMD as a CS. Sorcerers live and breathe magic, and therefore have that unique affinity.
  • Sacrifice XP for otherwise (materially) expensive spells.
  • Somewhat separated spell lists (Sorcerer and Mage [i.e., Wizard]). In other words, not every spell available to a Mage is necessarily available to a Sorcerer, and vice versa.
  • Changes to the mechanics and flavour of the systems of magic in use, in general. . .
  • Changes to chargen in general. . .
  • Er. The list goes on? :heh:
