Need Cool Class Names

Mark Chance

Boingy! Boingy!
Hello. I'm in the loooong-term planning process for my next D&D campaign. One of my goals will be to cut out the problem of book bloat, by which I mean having a list of "core" books longer than Paris Hilton's rap sheet. No Complete [fill-in-blank] (I mean, seriously, how complete, for example, could Complete Divine be if there's now a companion volume offering more divine-completeness?), no PH [attach most current Roman numeral], et cetera.

At the same time, I want to offer a wide variety of class choices, but all on my own terms, compiled into a single PDF document. To this end, I'm riveting together the various variant classes found at d20SRD.org into a coherent whole.

Unfortunately, some of the OGC names are generically dull. For example, a "divine bard" just doesn't sound neat-o enough for me, so I renamed it cantor. ("Bardic sage" becomes just a sage, paladin of freedom becauses a liberator, et cetera.) Unfortunately, I can't think of good renames for these:

Savage Bard
Druidic Avenger
Planar Ranger
Urban Ranger

The variant options which simply swap out class features I envision of descriptives applied to the modified class. For example, a barbarian using the variant that applies ranger class features in place of certain barbarian class features is called a huntsman. Here's the ones I can't get a good rename for:

Bard Variant
Druid Variant
Fighter Variant
Monk Variant
Ranger Variant
Rogue Variant

Suggestions?

Savage Bard = Skald. That one's a gimmie. ;)
Druidic Avenger already has a cool name, no?
Planar Ranger = Planestalker or Farwalker
Urban Ranger = Vigilante or Metro Ninja or Streetstalker

Do you need a whole different name for classes which just swap out one class feature or two? Whirling Frenzy Barbarian could be called a Whirling Berserker rather than a Wrathful Berserker (regular Barbarian), or even a Fast Berserker rather than a Strong Berserker... or even a Wolf Spirit Barbarian rather than a Wolverine Spirit Barbarian.

Anyway. Let's see...

Bard Variant = Fey Bard
Druid Variant = Wolf Fist
Fighter Variant = Lame and do you need to think of another name when this variant is combined with the Thug variant? Just let it be a building block. No-one should be taking more than four levels anyway.
Monk Variant = Stone Fist
Ranger Variant = Shifter or Wyld Huntsman
Rogue Variant = Expert or Professional :)

Fruitful suggestions so far. Also, if it helps, the campaign world will be built around pseudoGraeco-Roman island cultures, but with an emphasis on tropical rainforests and active volcanoes.

Savage Bard = Skald.
Druidic Avenger = Sentinel.
Planar Ranger = Planestalker.
Urban Ranger = Hawker. (This is what I've called them in the past, 'though it might not make any sense to anyone else.)
