[CC3] The Glamour Isles Map (7th Sea/Swashbuckling Adventures)

Today I decided to play with the Sarah Wroot style pack from the April edition of the Cartographer's Annual 2007 subscription from Profantasy (for use with Campaign Cartographer 3 mapping software). Sarah Wroot is a professional cartographic artist who did the maps for ICE's Cyradon campaign setting and Pelgrane Press's Dying Earth campaign. She also did the handrawn symbols that come in the Symbol Set 1 (SS1) add-on for CC3. This was relatively easy and straightforward to do based on the five page tutorial PDF that came with the April subscription. The only thing I did that might be a little challenging for a CC3 newbie would be to import an existing image to trace the land masses, but that's not hard either once you know how to do it. The templates included with the Sarah Wroot pack have all the effects on sheets pre-set. All I had to do was turn on effects after I drew the map.

NEXT UP: I'm going to do the same map of the Glamour Isles, this time using the Mercator (i.e. John Speed's Atlas of England and Wales) style pack for the January edition of the 2007 subscription. Part of the reason I'm doing this is to let people know that CC3 is a lot easier to use than CC2 ever was, and the styles of maps you can make are a lot more varied.

Nicely done!

Does CC3 allow for textures and such? I can see this easily being placed onto a rich vellum for that authentic feel. Great work!

Thanks. :)

Oh yes, CC3 allows for using textures like parchments and other types of tiles as the background. CC3 lets you do a lot with raster/bitmap art that you couldn't do before in CC2. I could probably replace the ocean background on that map with a parchment background, either one of your own creation or a tile image you find on the Internet. In fact, I believe the June edition of Cartographer's Annual will include parchments and such:

I've removed the sea background and added a parchment. Unfortunately, the way the border was set up in the original CC3 template, the parchment doesn't show through it. I'm going to try and play with that.

Edit: I removed the green landmass backgrounds for a cleaner look.

And just to show the power of the sheet effects in CC3, here's the original map with sheet effects turned OFF.

Definitely not as pretty.

So I made two changes to the parchment map - I removed the green landmass color and fixed the map border so the parchment would show through.

Tomorrow I want to play around with the Mecator/John Speed style, but now it's time to get outside and barbeque. :)

I like the first map the best.

Thanks :) Yeah, I like that one better too. I basically just added the parchment to show it could be done. CC3 has much better symbols and techniques for drawing handdrawn style maps on parchment than what I did.

Just for fun (and to show the power of CC3 sheet effects), here's the Mercator map with sheet effects turned OFF. The most dramatic difference you will see are the large red, green and purple blobs on the landmass, which become the political borders you see on the map above.
