House rule #1: "You can attempt to go anywhere."

What's your most important house rule?

Mine is that the PCs can go wherever they want whenever they want. There's no rule about PCs not going into the sleeping dragon's lair, even though they are only first level characters!

If they want to get eaten, that's they're problem.

So, running an open (rather than choreographed) campaign is my main house rule.

What's yours?

My #1 HR is probably dodge is +1 to AC, period. I think it was the first one I implemented at least, and I would never want to play without it.

This is not really a house-rule but a style of D&D gaming. More akin to old-school philosophy. Good and nice! :)

"Anything you can do, I can do also..."

This is the rule that says that the world will use any cheesy, er, uh, I mean, highly effective techniques the players implement that result from unusual combinations of feats, spells, etc. In other words, if you want to cheese the game through the use of game mechanics, expect the technique to be used on you afterwards. This has caused my players to carefully examine what they bring into the game, and the results have been most gratifying. The ill effects of gamer munchkinism has been held at bay, after we lost a few characters due to the players' tactics being used on them. I'll play "fair" if they will. ;)

Hope that helps,
Flynn
