Standing up...from a chair? Does this provoke an AoO?

My PCs just charged into a room and surprised a bunch of guards, some of which were sitting down in chairs when they burst in.

When it was finally the guards turn to act, they stood up and attacked. My player thinks that that should provoke an AoO, but I'm unsure how to rule on this. The SRD only covers "standing up from prone."

Stand Up
Standing up from a prone position requires a move action and provokes attacks of opportunity.

So, my question: Should standing up from sitting in a chair provoke an AoO?

(I'm inclined to say no, since mounting/dismounting a horse does not provoke.)

Personally, I'd have to say no. I'm think of those action movies where someone is sitting in a chair, jump up and spin out of it, then do something cool like throw it at the person in front of them. :D

I seem to remember something about rising from prone to one knee costing a move action and not provoking an AoO, and rising from one knee to standing functioning the same. I'd say that rising from a chair is similar, costing a move action and not provoking an AoO.

I'd agree with your ruling and your logic. I think standing up from sitting in a chair is more like dismounting a horse than it is standing up from prone. Not that it's exactly like either, but I think the mount/dismount rules are the closest parallel.

That was an old discussion here... and you recite the houserule most people use.

My favourite is reaching down and grabbing the front legs, and pulling the chair up through your own legs to block an attack / smash the attacker / throw the chair...

Many guys I know sit on chairs only with the back to the front... John Ringo writes about it something like: "He has known too many guys with a knife in the belly."

Doesn't help much against a battleaxe though, does it? :D
